Default 'Ultimate Avengers' - High-Def Digest Review

Kenneth's review of the 'Ultimate Avengers Collection' is up. He says the two films on the disc aren't likely to appeal much to most adult audiences, but comic fans will likely find a lot to love here, and young kids will probably get a kick out of these action-oriented introductions to popular Marvel superheroes. As a Blu-ray release, this one gets mixed marks -- video is average at best, while the supplements aren't very robust. On the bright side, Kenneth found the audio package to be extremely impressive.

I am a bit dissapointed by the review of the PQ. I ordered this from Amazon and it is already shipped to me, but I haven't received it yet due to selecting their supersaver option. Damn you multi-day wait! LOL. Anyway, I'll be taking a look at it myself once I receive it and hopefully this review will just be one of those that I chalk up to Peter's personal tastes.

[edit] I'm very sorry. I thought Peter reviewed this. Sorry Kenneth. I didn't mean to misrepresent you, or disregard you in any way.

Was this reviewed on a Samsung? They will introduce banding. I have seen the same thing playing Ice Age, it does not happen on the PS3.

There was a lot of motion blur with movement watching the SDVDs upconverted. I'm glad I didn't buy this like I was planning, I'll stick with the SD versions.

No - it was on a Sony player. But I just verified the visual banding issue on my PS3 (which is hooked up to a Mitsubishi DLP). Hope that helps clarify things.

Thanks for the review - I've been eagerly awaiting this for quite a while. Unfortunate about the PQ...I guess I'll just have to stick to my Superman and Justice League (& Ultimate) animated series on DVD to get my fix....

Thanks for the info. I am surprised a studio would ship something like that (other than fox)

Just to be nitpicky...

It should probably be tweaked to say "In the US" since there are a few 2D animation releases in region A.

It's unfortunate that while HDDigest continues to review "import" HD DVD releases, they won't look at some of the same-region releases that are out but not released in the US.

I sent an email to Ken Brown pointing out this very thing. I pointed out to him, in fact, that Ghost in the Shell: Innocence, has been available on Blu-ray since December(?), and furthermore was appearing in high definition on DirecTV PPV before that even.

This is a Region A title with English subtitles no less, but even if it weren't, the statement that Avengers 'are the first feature length 2D animation releases in high definition' would still be false, any way you look at it.

Yep; even Innocence is predated by Project Papo (the only 720P BD I believe) that came out on 11/3 and then Brave Story in late November. Even HD DVD got those two particular releases.

There you go. I didn't even know about those releases. I should really check your site more often Chris.
