Angry 'Speed' BD - Faulty

My copy of 'Speed' BR refuses to play in the Sammy player. I have the latest firmware installed. Based on people's reports on AVS Forum & HTF, I'm guessing Fox either had a bad initial pressing or it's just that the Sammy is the culprit.

Try messin around with the Parental settings.

I havn't got my copy yet, but most playback problems I've encountered have to do with the dumb Parental set.

Also check the inner part of the spindle hole for the alpha-numeric code applied to all optical media. Some are speculating that Fox packaged blanks, as this code is missing.

I also had some trouble with the Speed disc. I ordered it from Amazon and it would not played and the disc appeared to be scratched. I returned it and bought one from Best Buy and the disc was fine. The load time however was unbearable.

I ordered another copy. Let's see how that goes.

It looks like some of the rumors about the Samsung having playback issues with future discs are ending up being true.

My 2nd disc, from a different vendor, does not play either. Tried it 3 times. The disc spins for a while, then the Sammy just spits it out w/a 'This disc is not playable' kind of message. Don't recall the exact message.

Mine worked fine in the ps3, so the disc is fine. I'm guessing the BD-J on this disc isn't completely compatible with all players yet. But like I said it works fine on ps3!

Default SPEED A MIXED BAG on SAMSUNG BDP1000

I'd get the same error message; that it would not play. After reinserting it about 5 times it finally got to the menus. But alas only to find out that half way into the movie the disc froze - followed by a gazillion pixel breakups.

Sooooooo, I bought another one (SPEED) and amazingly, it plays fine. Could be a just a badly pressed batch of discs, or worse, software or hardware problem. I'll wait on FOX and see what they say. All the other Fox Titles, however, play fine.

I don't think the issue is with the Samsung per se. It obviously does something in a different way than other BD players. Still it is evidently opertaing within the parameters set out by the BDA. Fox has accepted responsibility for the problem with Speed and will be replacing discs at their expense for the people affected.

BTW: Kudos to Fox for taking the high ground, admitting their error and offering a solution to the people affected. Had this been another prominent Blu-ray studio, I think we can be pretty certain that they would have found a way to shift the blame to someone else.

From the PR that's come out, at least the shortened versions I've seen, it's basically a situation of a bad batch in the mdist of pressing. This is a problem that occurs even on DVD today. It's a non-issue really and FOX should really be commended for such a quick response and such a painless replacement program.

Make sure people read that Fox is aware of this being an issue with the Samsung player and that they have corrected the issue and will replace, at no charge, any defective discs that people may have for their Samsung.

At this stage of the game, it isn't suprising that a glich showed up, but it is good that they quickly have acknowledged it and are fast to respond in a positive manner. I personally had no issues at all with it on my PS3.

Default No Speed on Sony BDP-S1

My copy of Speed does not play on my Sony BDP-S1.

I get some a circle of white dots on the screen that cycle, almost as though the machine is thinking. But no menu loads.

Anyone else have similar issues with the Sony player ?

Default BDP-S1 and Speed

I also have the Sony BDP-S1 and it won't play. I get the same circle of dots on the screen and then finally it says the disc can not be played.

Default Speed and Sony BDP-S1

I did try the Speed disc on my Sony BDP-S1 again a few more times. It did finally load. The picture quality is not much better than an upconverted sd dvd. There are some scenes with white specks. When stopping the disc, playback will not resume where it left off, it has to reload and start from the beginning again so only pause if you don't want to restart. I'm glad I only paid $14.99 for it on eBay.
