Default 'Dragon Ball Z: Tree of Might/ Lord Slug' - High-Def Digest Review

Kenneth has reviewed 'Dragon Ball Z: Tree of Might/ Lord Slug.' He's grown more familiar with the series, but takes this opportunity to suggest that FUNimation start releasing seasons of the series. This Blu-ray has problematic video and audio and no supplements. For fans only.

Great Review Ken. You have no idea how much I hate DBZ.

You do realize those ARE remastered right? They took the crappy grainy picture they used to have, remastered them and made them in glorious WS. This is the best the movies are ever going to look. I for one am happy Funi is releasing the DBZ movies on Blu-Ray, as I will not buy the series since I have been getting the Season sets on DVD. The series is good, but it ain't THAT good. I cannot wait for the next batch though, as the Cooler movies are some of my favorites right behind Fusion Reborn. Curiously though, I wonder how they are going to package the 13th movie, is it going to be witht eh GT movie, or are movies 11-13 going to be on one disc.

Actually the best they look are in the Japanese DragonBox release. Not only have the been remastered frame by frame, but they boast many extras. I am glad I own all the DragonBoxes instead of FUNImations horrible mess. It is funny that the Image quality on japanese release is better than the "remastered" footage.

They're remastered in the loosest sense of the term. FUNi advertised a frame-by-frame restoration, but that's simply not what they did. They ran each film through a general restoration process, but certainly didn't give the films a proper remastering. If they had, a lot of the damage, wobble, wavering, etc would not be present. The picture would be sharper as well as it seems they've applied a basic filtering process to the many of the specials/films they've released.

I would definitely say they could look much better. However, the reality is that the DBZ specials and films will never be profitable enough to justify such an expensive, time-consuming remastering. My biggest beef with the studio is that they've misled consumers into thinking these are the best each one can look.

I'm glad they're releasing them and wouldn't mind the quality as much if FUNi hadn't set fan expectation so high with their marketing. Ah well. Thanks as always for posting!

That's what I hear. I really wanted to track down the Japanese releases for a proper comparison to the domestic BDs, but it would have been a bit too expensive considering I would just be using them for comparison purposes.

seeing as they're releasing Samurai 7 boxset soon, i hope they do a good job on it. Funimation has some damn good properties, and so far, we're not seeing them, or seeing the best they can be.

i'd just like to see how much some people paid for the original db dvd's, now that the dvd seasons are out, and blu's and dvd steelbook double features.

Slow motion with sound effects and 70s style kung fu dubbing included maybe?

Samurai 7 mayyyyy have source issues. While it was animated digitally at 1080p, I THINK (not sure) it was the studios first series done by a tv crew at that resolution.

Hoping for a ludicrously pretty release, but I wouldn't be overly surprised if there were some issues.

Fan of Samurai 7 as well, hope that gets a good release. Can't say 'Funi' track with DBZ having not watched any, but hopefully they'll do a little better then Afro Samurai on PQ.

Funimation hasn't done mediocre since 2003. Ever since they became a real anime company, they have done nothing but do their best. Look at One Piece, they saved that series from the ****hole that is 4Kids, and are giving us a fantastic dub with 13 episodes in each volume.
