Default 'The Thing' - High-Def Digest Review

Peter's review of 'The Thing' has been posted. He says this is a true cult classic. This Blu-ray is a mixed bag, with strong video and audio, but a supplements package that ditches many features of past releases. Not for completeists, but worth a look.

I'm not big on special features, so I'm fine with just having the movie. I've already got the HD DVD, and reading that there are no differences between that version and the Blu-ray, picture-wise, I'll upgrade for the slightly extra sound boost sometime later when there are less movies coming out I want to pick up.

Groovy review.

Mistake:

Universal produced a fine 1080p/VC-1 transfer for the 2006 Blu-ray release of 'The Thing' and doesn't mess with the formula here. We get that same master once again on Blu-ray

Yeah, Universal definitely wasn't releasing on Blu-ray in 2006.

Yeah. They better get right on fixing that, as it's certainly the most important sentence in the entire review.

Cool, looks like I won't be getting rid of my HD-DVD after all.

Ironically, the only reason I'll be getting The Thing on BD is, because I ordered the horror BD bundle which saves me a few dollars.

John Carpenter films with special features are a treasure!

Great flick! Held off on the HDDVD, 4sure getting the BD. One of my fav movies from the '80s, the effects would still put CG effects these days to shame.

Meh, there really isn't too much missing, since they just reformatted the (great) documentary into a PiP track.

Cool stuff. Glad I'm getting the Halloween starter pack, since it works out to be like 14 bucks a movie.

Looks like there is no real point to getting this if you own the HD DVD version. I find it very sad that some extras were dropped. It looks like the only real upgrade is the DTS-MA sound, which for such an old movie can't do much for the source. This Universal trend of releasing previously HD DVD titles, dropping extras, but adding DTS-MA (i.e. see End of Days) makes me think more and more that the whole DD+ drop in favor of DTS-MA was just a huge gimmick to entice HD DVD owners to double dip on the BD re-releases. I'm not biting anymore.

definite buy for me. this was the first movie to ever give me a nightmare when i was a kid, I was born the year it came out.

I love just about every movie Kurt Russell ever made and am a huge John Carpenter fan. Now if they'd just release Big Trouble in Little China and Captain Ron on blu ray

The commentary between Kurt and John is always great.

This movie is a true 80's classic. Can't wait to own the Blu-ray. I remember the HD DVD looked pretty darn good.
