Default 'Pale Rider' - High-Def Digest Review

Kenneth has reviewed 'Pale Rider.' He says it's a fascinating glimpse at Clint Eastwood's then developing directorial skills. Not a genre classic, but quite good. This Blu-ray has an above average transfer, faithful lossless audio, but no supplements. This is worth a look.

I've always like Pale Rider. Any move where Eastwood goes hardcore at the end is worth a view in my book. Good review Ken.

Ken, I don't have the disc to check but I'm pretty sure this is a BD-25.... at least I think it is.

Anyway, nice review (as usual).

I initially assumed it would be BD-25 but, to my surprise, it's a dual-layer disc. Still, I checked again just now to be sure.

And thanks for the compliments (Super-VHS and Kenshiro). You guys are too kind.

The first and only Clint E. older movie I saw was I think The Good The Bad and The Ugly because it was my ATV .99 download of the week. I got halfway through and fell asleep and never got to finish it. Dont get me wrong, I was enjoying the movie, its just that it was 3 o clock and I was tired as a B. First time in awhile I fell asleep in a movie.

But anyway I think Ill give this a look. Ive seen it on TV alot so I mite just check it out their and save all my rentals for titles that more interest me such as newer releases.

"I just hadn’t taken the time to sample some of the obscure, lesser known flicks in his directorial canon."

Lesser known??? Obscure???

That said I have to agree with the overall review; the film is not perfect but it is still classic Clint. It is a great movie with beautiful cinematograpghy and that classic Eastwood understated toughness. This a movie where the main character, preacher, has no name and no background before it was a cliche.

Besides, how many perfect films is one director allowed?

This movie is great IMO. I'm very happy with my purchase of this Blu-ray.

"While a handful of night shots suffer from slight crushing and unresolved black levels". A handful? How about every night scene, and most interior shots.

I rented this from Blockbuster by Mail, as I've been considering buying a copy, but I've stopped blind buying any Warner high-def release. While most outdoor shots look pretty good, Pale Rider is unfortunately a far too typical low bitrate VC-1 one setting does all encode from Warner. Not a keeper for me.

Im torn at picking this up or not. While I love the movie I keep seeing negative posts regarding it. Arg! While the review here makes me think to buy it. The negative posts has me second guessing the decision.

Well it's the best it looks for viewing in your home i'd say and I suspect if there ever is another release it will be many years away. I'm happy with my copy but I wasn't upgrading from DVD or anything.

Im not one of those super picky HD guys. If the movie looks better and clearer than the DVD Im usually happy. Even the added scenes in Stargate (thats a lot of grain lol) didnt bother me too much. They did at first until I realized they had just been thrown in. At first I thought wtf is wrong with my movie. And then put 2 and 2 together and realized that was all the extra/extended/added content. So then it was fine.

So if there is no serious issues with the movie I guess I should be ok. Guess Ill order this in the next few days. Ill post back.

One of my favorite Clint westerns, and I didn't have it on DVD (didn't it come in one of those crappy snapper cases??), so no problems buying it on blu for me.
