you might not want to call him an idiot but iam more than happy to, trust me the guy is an A**clown. I have had the misfortune of dealing with him at work on more than one occasion.

by the way iam not watching on a regular display iam watching on my 1080p DLP projector, my image area is roughly 12 feet across. the hd dvd and bluray pictures look identical if there is a difference there isnt a big of one as he was going on and on about.
now the sound there is a huge improvement on the bluray , but the image improvement is not really that noticeable.

iam glad to have it on bluray now though, to compliment the vastly superior transformers the animated movie i have on uk import.

HD-DVD

Blu Ray

HD-DVD is still a great transfer, but the blu ray version, technically, is better, the higher bit-rate yields finer detail and Bay was correct to say that the blu version would be better. I wouldn't call him an idiot.

People watching at home with average sized displays may not see a difference. If we dig a little deeper however, there is a difference and that difference vindicates Michael Bays comments.

Who wouldn't want the version that's closer to master with the least compression???

Thanks for posting the defininitive evidence (as usual) Xylon. I guess we'll just have to wait for the BD-50-optimized version that Bay was talking about. Triple dip for some I guess.

In the end I think that the studio "leaving the transfer alone" unlike what they did with U-571 Blu-ray and among others is huge sigh of relief.

Can you imagine if they DNR and EE this ala Patton or Dark City?

I agree with you, its just the way michael bay was going postal over the night and day difference every one would see, its just kind of funny that both look just as equally beautiful.

Thanks for the comparison. At first I was trying to understand the point and thought you were proving the BD version better than the HD version through all the HD mumbojumbo but looking at pics i came to the conclusion that both HD and BD look the same and then made me realize why I love High Definition

Yes, please, but only do action sequences. I will ace them all.

(And for the record, I do not own Transformers in any format).

Yo Xylon, I always love seeing the comparisons you put up. Especially when you include the SD with them.

Do you take any requests on movies? Just wondering how you're choosing which ones to compare.

Question about the DVD screenies; Are they taken from the raw material or after an upscaler does its work?

No match for real high-defintion PQ. Details, details, details.
This is why I am such an advocate for HDM. In many cases, DVD looks pretty bad next to Blu-Ray/HD DVD. Even upconverted. It would look even worse if it were not upconverted which is what most Americans would see.

That is why when people say that J6P cannot tell the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray I cringe. Unless J6P seriously needs glasses, the difference is so obvious it is utterly ridiculous to argue over.

I think it's because of a couple of reasons. 1, display setups are rarely done correctly in stores. and 2, jp6 don't know what to look for. My wife for instance. I would have to point out the differences to her and she would just shrug. " It's so minor! Who cares!" That's what HDM is fighting against. I'll take HDM myself

My wife is no videophile and she can easily notice the difference between Blu-Ray and DVD (most of the time). Same with HD satellite broadcasts vs SD.

People say that going from VHS to DVD was a big jump in PQ and I find Blu-Ray to be a bigger jump from DVD.

Yeah, well you've also got a 100" screen.

For me, the difference is negligible, which is probably why I've been so slow at supporting Blu since HD DVD's demise.

For an example of what I'm looking at, take an HD/BD and SD copy of one of the screenies in this thread and resize both to 1366x768. The huge difference in quality shrinks quite a bit. They're still distinguishable though, obviously. But then imagine looking at both on a 37" TV from 8 feet away.

Quality varies between transfers, or so I've found. There are some titles on which we've double-dipped and my wife and I have both been pretty hard-pressed to see any advantage of the high-def version (BD or HD DVD, as applicable) over the DVD. On others, the difference was instantly noticeable.

Very true. Even on my 52 inch Samsung some upconverted DVDs look like 3/5 HDs. Those are the best though upconverts tho.
