Default 'Afro Samurai: Season 1' - High-Def Digest Review

Kenneth has reviewed 'Afro Samurai: Season 1.' He says it had him grinning from ear to ear. Unfortunately, he was very disappointed by the video on this Blu-ray. Sound, story, and supplements are all great though, so it's worth a look.

As anyone who read my thread earlier will know Im in love with this disc. Watched all of season one today, and will do soagain tomorrow. Although I was impressed by the video itself I feel anyone who has the slightest interest in anime owes it to themselves to own this disc.

I'm surprised by just a 3 star rating for the video, thought it was worthy of at least a 3.5-4 especially since HDD gave Freedom:6 in HD DVD a 4.5 rating and I thought that was only maybe a 3.5-4. Afro is still an excellent disc to own especially at a low price point.

I guess I'm the eagle-eyed Best Buy guy. I agree with all scores in the review, except for the video. I still think this is a sharp transfer, definitely a 4 or 4.5 out of 5. Not on the same level as Tekkonkinkreet, but still great.

Has this actually been compared to the so called "problematic" japanese BD. I have the japanese BD and reviewed it at DTVForum (http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?a...&showentry=308) and other than only being 1080i and some banding issues, was not problematic. If this has in actuality been compared and is better I would like to know so I can pick up a better copy. If no comparison has been done, then it's not fair to assume this is better.

In general I agree with the review completely Kenneth (although I think I'd give it 3.5 for the video myself, but.... that banding does get annoying...)

Only issue I have with the review honestly, you should REALLY remove the (potential) spoiler about Ninja Ninja for those who read the review and haven't seen Afro Samurai all the way through.

Samuel Jackson, Ron Perlman and Yuri Lowenthal. Wow. I might have to blind buy this.

[edit]
Region locked... *sigh*

Whoops. It hasn't been confirmed and I'll change the error. I was looking at specs for the import. Sorry!

Yep -- that's why I mentioned them directly in the review. If I hadn't compared them, I would have said as much to make sure there was no confusion. Anyway, the import Blu-ray exhibited more artifacting and some interlacing issues, thus the superiority of the domestic BD. It was also problematic in the sense that it reportedly gave people with particular BD players more problems than others. Hope that helps.

Yeah, I edited my post about the region coding confirmation almost immediately after I hit "submit reply." Don't worry, I gave myself a stiff slap across the forehead (for the initial error and the followup error).

My thanks to everyone who catches and alerts us to minor mistakes in our reviews! It helps us keep everything up to date and completely accurate.
