Default 'U-571' - High-Def Digest Review

Peter's review of 'U-571' has been posted. He's still not a fan, but says this Blu-ray is demo material. The decision to repurpose previous bonus material in picture-in-picture form is debatable, but as far as high-def eye and ear candy is concerned, this is your disc.

I guess I'm always a sucker for submarine movies. I remember liking this in the theater and the dozens of times I saw this on DVD. Once I get my rig upgraded so I can get DTS-MA I look forward to watching this again on !

Even though I subscribe to every word Peter had to say about the movie itself I am still going to quintuple-dip it. I had it on DVD, D-VHS, the horrible UK Blu-ray and the much better (but still butchered to 1.78:1) Japanese Blu-ray. Now, I am looking forward to the real thing in the Action Starter Pack. This movie is so stupid that it is almost close to brilliant in some weird way*) - at least it's a feast for eyes and ears, that's for sure!

*) I specifically like the line "They (the Germans) are so stupid they wouldn't know a piston from ther sisters tits."

A quick note about the review. He says, "nearly the entire sub crew is improbably, hilariously Caucasian". Just as a historical factoid, the armed forces were segregated at the time. Outside of a few all black crews on DDEs, pretty much the only job a minority (be they Asian, African American, Hispanic, etc) could have in the USN was steward or cook.

"I also liked the way none of the American soldiers could read German, yet easily took command of the German sub and its technology. Man, these guys are good."

Errrr....If he has all these versions of the film, how could he have possibly missed the german kid running around telling everybody what all the controls were because....he could read german!?

I dont care who or what they say about U-571.
Who cares real facts about history!
Its very entertaining, I have watched it way too many times.
Everytime I did, it felt like watching the first time.
Paxton, McConaughey( has shirt on all the time ), Keitel, Bon Jovi, Jake Weber.. bunch of not great but good actors.(except Keitel, He's great)

This is one of my favorite recent WW II movies, though as usual I pretty ignore the review and just got for audio/video comments.

While I'll agree that comparing U-571 to Das Boot is like comparing a delicious ripe apple to a rotten, squashed orange, the fact that Mr. Bracke rips the film for the crew being "improbably, hilariously Caucasian" (I suggest you brush up on segregation in the military during WWII) and "none of the American soldiers could read German, yet easily took command of the German sub and its technology" (Did you even pay attention to the movie?), makes his assessment about as accurate as the film's historical accuracy.
