Default 'Miami Vice' - High-Def Digest Review

Peter's review of 'Miami Vice' has been posted. He doesn't feel it's a successful re-imagining of the 80's TV series, but guesses there's enough action here to keep cop movie fans entertained. This Blu-ray release is superior to the previous HD DVD, with equivalent video, improved audio, and a more complete supplement package. Recommended for fans, otherwise, give it a rent.

I found this movie to be just okay (have the HD DVD version). If you have not seen it yet I would encourage renting before buying. It could have been much better..

this movie is a towering classic from michael mann. the video noise is part of the artistic presentation of the movie. think of this as a feature film version of "cops" except undercover vice. the purpose is to capture the realism of the dangers that these people go through and what lines they can or can't cross. that's why the PQ and the choice to go digital.

i had this on HD DVD, sold it and now eagerly await lossless audio =D. i'm so excited =D.

What? This was the worst Michael Mann movie he's ever directed. Collateral was much better mainly because Tom Cruise is a deranged hitman.

This film rocks.

I don't understand. If Peter's not a fan of Micahel Mann's work, why have him review Miami Vice? He's going to hate it anyway.

I confused.

I'm not one to bash reviews, I guess I'm still not here, but how do you not know that the digital noise is intent? That, and it's DD+ on the release not standard DD... I also thought the 's DD+ was better than the review stated.

I thought it was a good movie. I own the copy, and have watched it a few times. I'll rent the copy, but I doubt the audio alone will be worth the replacement.

Tell me about it. I'm not a big fan of Peter's reviews anyways. I usually just skip past them.

I liked this movie but then for me a lot of a Michale Mann movie is in the cinematography. Take away the Mann aesthetic and your left with an average film.

I do agree that the Tubbs character was boring and I am not a Colin Farrel fan but I thought he was good on this.

I'd like to know (for sure) as well...... but, I'm going to say that it's a mistake. Universal said that VC-1/DTS-HD MA are their codecs of choice so...

"'Miami Vice' 2006-style is deadly serious, and owes far more of a debt to Mann's 'Heat' or such recent hardcore cop films like 'Narc' and 'Running Scared' than to the legacy left by Johnson and Philips."

Umm.. who is Philips? Do you mean Philip Michael Thomas?

Great review. I totally agree. This film failed in every way that the 80s show succeeded. And casting Colin Farrell has the lead has me baffled. He is as smooth as the day-old stubble he fashions in every film.

Do you have to enjoy the movie to give an honest opinion of PQ and AQ? If you're considering buying the disc, then obviously you must like the movie, right? Do many purchase DVDs and blu-rays simply based upon a review? Without even renting it first?

^^^^Okay, so it is VC-1... it's just (another) mistake by Peter listing and commenting on the AVC encode?

If it is VC-1, do you know if it was re-encoded or is it a port of the HD DVD?

It is VC-1, I thought it wasn't re-encoded. It looks identical, but I'm not a fan of checking the bitrates.
