I think all other regions are getting a stand-alone but us.

I'm still waiting to hear if this is a BD-25

yeah i guess that falls in line with Warner's strategy.
kind of frustrating.
For being my favorite studio Warner has really pissed me off lately.
The "ultimate x-mas story Blu-Ray" is clearly just the "ultimate rip-off"
I mean not even including the new extras that are on the sd version is just unforgivable imo.
and the "Dirty harry" titles are STILL not available as individual titles as they are overseas.
GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Warner truly has become SO GOOD, SO BAD at the same time.

Hello there!

The packaging is amazing and I'm completely sold!

Casablanca is a very important movie, and I'm glad to see it gets such a nice
treatment. Imho the price is well worth the package!

I'd agree though, that WB should release a stand alone version of it as well
(like the one they'll be releasing in Europe), so that the customers can
choose...

But choice or no choice, I'm glad it comes out this way. Looking forward to
all the extras a lot...

I guess after this, my trusty HD-DVD version will be phased out...

B/R

i don't think that the movie was exclusive due to disc-capacity considerations...warner was probably concerned that the title wouldn't sell well early in blu-ray's life cycle.

Casablanca
--------
VC-1 @ 18 Mbps
DDPlus 1.0 @ 64Kbps
Runtime: 1:42:28
Video File Size: 14,524,678,144
Disc Spaced Used: 24,410,694,198
--------

It appears that I was incorrect w/the disc size.... I figured that the complete file size (movie + extras) was larger than 25 GBs because it specifically authored for HD DVD... not necessarily because the video encode was so high in bitrate or audio codec or anything like that. It was more because the disc has a lot of extras (in MPEG-2) and that plus the nearly two hour film made me think that it was a larger file (than 25 gigs).

Also, I figured that the exclusivity of this title was probably because it was over 25 gigs and @ the time of it's release (Nov '06) the BD DL was in limited availability. Like I said, I was wrong... It appears that the file size will indeed fit within the BD-25 disc.

Oh, and the original track is mono so (as you can see) it's not (and won't be) 640 Kbps Dolby Digital but rather 64 Kbps.

64kbps!!? That's a pathetically low bitrate! Doesnt matter how old the track is or if its only mono, that is like, voip quality...

doing the math it has to mean 640Kbps. the video only portion of the file comes out to around 13.7GB while a 640Kbps track comes out to around 478MB. a 64Kbps audio track would only be around 48MB.

I guess I'll be holding on to my hd-dvd copy for awhile, at least until a standalone blu-ray appears. Don't understand why Warner doesn't give us a choice. If you happen to have both formats, this is too pricey, especially when you can find the hd-dvd at places like Fry's for about $8.

All other regions are getting a stand-alone disc. This is stupid.

Casablanca is my favourite film of all time and i'll most likely purchase the region A Blu-ray release despite the inflated price.

I don't care about the packaging - I just want to clarify that, video quality wise, this transfer can't possibly be any worse than the HD DVD, right?

So does anyone know if it comes in a Blu-ray case? I'm getting it any day this week, and I'm anxious to know.

Oh no. Is Casablanca a digibook? I bought the Poltergeist one and even though it looks nice, I don't like it at all.
