Default 'Nim's Island' - High-Def Digest Review

Peter's review of 'Nim's Island' has been posted. He says it's a charming family film (albeit it one with e few problems). This Blu-ray has a decent video transfer and stronger audio and supplements. Worth a look.

Default I thought the pq was really good

I couldn't disagree more about this not being a demo disc, the shots of the island are full of color and really pop. Ralph potts at AVS gave the 34mps AVC encode a 94 out of 100. Here is what he wrote about the pq of Nim's Island and i totally concur, i don't know what Peter was watching.

Quote:
The video presentation was of reference quality and looked superb. Detail is exquisite as it delivers intricate and subtle textures with near flawless execution. It didn’t leave me wanting for better image penetration as it revealed the three dimensional depth and clear perception of nearly everything that passed into the camera’s view. The shots of the landscapes on the island were stunning. The rich and lush colors of the jungle, beach and ocean were reproduced with visually striking hues and uncompromised tonal separation. The wide variety of colors, surface textures, and object detail in Alex’s apartment was resolved with vivid depth of field, vibrancy and razor sharp acuity. Flesh tones were a little warm but looked golden rather than burnt. Black levels were not inky but had enough depth that they looked excellent with mixed content. Contrast was boosted which drove the sun drenched sequences and made them really pop. White detail in those scenes was mildly crushed but retained visibility. This is the type of high definition video that enthusiasts love to use to show off the high resolution of their video displays. It looked absolutely beautiful and certainly indicative of the potential inherent in the Blu-ray Disc format.

What's up with the Exclusive HD content section missing from the review?

this disc has been getting rave reviews and comments everywhere else. I've read many saying it's demo worthy. I won't be picking it up but to give it 3 stars for video makes no sense.

DVDTOWN REVIEW
Notes on PQ:

Quote:
very clean and highly detailed

This is an absolutely gorgeous film and the scenes that take place on and around the South Pacific island look stunning.

The blue water sends me yearning to take a vacation and the colors and detail just come to life from the 1080p resolution

The dark scenes where the island and Jack´s boat are being battered by a storm hold up very nicely and show strong black levels and shadow detail.

I rented this for my girls, and it bored me to tears. It did look good, but the movie had nothing appealing to me.

I agree with you on the movie, but the pq was excellent. Would you have given 3/5 or a 6/10, i mean that is 60%, a D-. I think Peter needs his eyes checked based on this review.

Once upon a time, I took reviews at this site seriously.

It's a mistake to try to create a grading score analogy from star ratings - if anything, a three star-rating should be considered middle of the road or "adequate" as stated in the review.

With that being said, I think Peter really missed the mark on the PQ review for this one and as more reviews of this title are published it will be found well-below the consensus rating.

Mosman22, I agree with you, on my 150" screen this film looks fantastic, I was extremely impressed by the stunning picture, soundtrack was great too, and I enjoyed the story much more than I thought I would. I was watching a rental but I do plan to purchase it.
