Default 'CJ7' - High-Def Digest Review

Kenneth has reviewed the domestic release of 'CJ7.' He says it's a charming family flick. This Blu-ray edition features excellent video, faithful TrueHD audio, and some good supplements. A good choice for a family movie night.

Default Can''t wait

I can't wait to see it, i loved shaolin soccer and kung fu hustle. Also the fact that the subtitles are over the black bar and not the picture is a big plus. I have mentioned this before but i really believe customizable subtitles should be a part of blu-ray. Where i prefer yellow others prefer white, being able to change color, location and size would be a good feature. I hate when the subs are over the film making it more difficult for me to read sometimes.

They partially appear over the picture as well. I made note of their positioning because projection screen users have a difficult time with subtitled movies if any part of the subtitles appear below the edge of the picture (on the black bars). I wish there were subtitle customization options as well, but this disc definitely doesn't have any.

They're fucking idiots that were expecting Kung Fu Hustle 2.

If that was meant to be a CB4 joke, it failed miserably.

Regarding the audio being 'sounding' artificially looped in post production. I'd assume the whole movie was done that way. I don't know if it still is, but it used to be the norm for Hong Kong productions, and was a big part of the cinema style Chow was brought up in and cites as his influences. I can't say if the industry as a whole still does it, but I would be suprised if the vast majority of the movie's dialogue wasn't ADRed in a studio after the film had wrapped. Often they will make a few lines specifically stand out for whatever reason, which is my guess what was done here.

Good review, planned on picking this up next week for awile.

There are Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese actors appearing together, sometimes both speaking in their native tongues at once. The whole film was then ADR'd in Cantonese AND Mandarin. If you watch the movie in either dub, neither matches 100%. It would be impossible.

I thought it was strange that the Mandarin track is TrueHD but the Cantonese track is standard DD. WTF!

Can anyone confirm?

A bit cheeky of Sony, The Hong Kong disc I have has both Mandarin and Cantonese TrueHD, in addition to a Thai TrueHD track.
