Default 'The Hunt for Red October' - High-Def Digest Review

Kenneth's review of'The Hunt for Red October' has been posted. He says the film is a classic and one of his personal favorites. This highly anticipated Blu-ray features eye-pleasing video, immersive audio, and a smattering of supplemental material. Recommended.

Nice...I was hoping the PQ and AQ would deliver.

'endure the decades...'

You gotta love the hyperbole. The movie was release less than 2 decades ago.

I saw this when it first came out and thought it was boring as hell.

I am much more interested in a detailed comparison with the HD DVD. I had it and sold it as I knew that it would show up on BD soon. And by soon I mean that the UPS man should be here in about 2 hours with it.

I am a big fan of Clancy's earlier books (the last three or so are crap) and always felt that Baldwin was a little too slick to be Jack Ryan. Harrison Ford was perfect, except that in Patriot Games he was about 15 or 20 years older than Jack Ryan was supposed to be. I have never seen sum of all fears, but will likely rent the Blu to see how badly Ben Affleck muffs it.

Anyway, Sean Connery alone is worth the price of admission on this one.

Watched it last night. I'd give 3.5 for both PQ and AQ which isn't spectacular obviously. Nothing wrong with the picture as it didn't distract me or take away from me experiencing this movie again as I'm a fan.

More than likely it beats the SD DVD but I haven't done a comparison. I'd say go for it if you like this movie but don't expect lots of eye or ear candy. Rental is always the best recommendation if you are on the fence.

"it’s widely considered one of the best submarine flicks of all time"

thats completly wrong the best sub classic is not hunt for red october even this is very good. But the best sub clasic is Das Boat by the great director Wolfgang peters before Hollywood did destroy his talent.

I totally and wholeheartedly agree -- 'Das Boot' is the best sub movie on the block.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, but that's why I wrote 'The Hunt for Red October' is "one of the best" and not the best.

Thanks as always for posting!

BTW, it's 'Das Boot' (not Boat) and the director is 'Wolfgang Petersen' (not Peters). Though I'm sure it's one of your fav's.

Both are great flics IMHO. I enjoy both immensely. The pacing is completely different between the two so I think there's room for both. The only thing that they have in common is that they both revolve around subs.

This will be a blind buy for me when I can find it used for a descent price. I'm a little too young (25) to have seen this in it's glory days.

I wouldn't be surprised if more people have seen Hunt though, so it might still be more highly regarded than Das Boot, simple because, more have seen it.

That being said, it does make me a little sad seeing that...or even Neverending Story, than thinking about stuff like Troy or Poseiden. Wolfgang is a pale imitation of his former self, now he just peddles mediocre stuff with some nice special effects.

Really in 25 years you haven't see it at least once? It was on AMC everyday for like 3 years (or so it seemed.) Now it's on HDNET and UniHD all the time.....

I find it quite astonishing that you haven't seen this movie..... not that there's anything wrong with not seeing it...... it's just surprising.

They actually showed it again last week in the wee hours of the morning. Agreed on Das Boot I'm a big sub nut and have probably seen just about every sub movie made. The only problem I have with Das Boot is the real sized remote controlled sub was only half the size of a real U-Boat but to get the shot of real people on a real boat can't be CGI'd. So it wouldn't look real but the scene where they are putting out to sea leaving the sub hanger is where it doesn't look right.

But you have to get the original directors cut in German it's the only way to watch this flick imo.
