Thumbs up 'Ice Age: The Meltdown' -- High-Def Digest review

Really enjoyed 'Ice Age: The Meltdown' tonight:

Great transfer, soundtrack and extras. The film is great fun, too. A real top-notch one for Blu-ray -- glad to see Fox can really deliver when they want to.

Call me crazy but wasnt that movie originally posted as a Mpeg 4 AVC rather than Mpeg 2?

Well Ice Age is one I definitely hope to pick up once I pick up my PS3 (in March). Loved the first one, haven't seen the second yet, but it seemed to get generally positive reviews, anyway Scrat's the real star of the show!

I think this is the first Fox Blu-Ray title to receive a Recommended review after the price and supplements were taken into account.

I'd agree this is a very good BR release, but there is noticeable banding. This is most noticeable in the sky scenes at the start of the feature.

The banding is an issue that the animators must resolve; essentially, it's hardly visible at all when shown on film but they need to up their own resolution during rendering for home video. The banding is in the source so there's nothing the authoring can do beyond softening the picture to help blend it more - which would be bad. Pixar tends to do things a bit different with their digital animation so they usually avoid any really noticable banding, but it's visible in some areas on their films as well.

First off, wow, it's been 2 years since anyone commented on this movie. Anyways, just wondering if this, like many other early reviews for movies that have a DTS-HD MA soundtrack will be re-reviewed now that there is hardware capable of decoding it? Just wondering 'cause I always like to re-read a movie review after watching it and I just got this movie in as part of my Amazon Fox sale.

Wow . . . it has been a long time.

I agree with your underlying point. I understand the idea of going back and changing ratings, and how difficult that would be. But an actual soundtrack on the disc that wasn't playable then but is now definately deserves to be re-visited.
