Default 'Shine A Light' - High-Def Digest Review

Peter's review of 'Shine a Light' has been posted. He says the film is a surprisingly conventional documentary on the Rolling Stones. This Blu-ray presents the film nicely, with good video and audio, but skimpy extras. For fans only.

Peter's impeccable taste comes through again.

I think he missed the point of the movie. This is a concert movie first and documentary second.

And, I thought the PQ was reference quality, myself.

shit; now I'm confused. This was going to be a day-one blind purchase for me, as I've been in a concert blu groove recently.

Now, I'm not so sure. I typically agree with the reviews on HDD for the most part; can anyone else weigh in on the film itself, as well as the PQ/AQ?

There's a review that I think is a bit closer to my views, except maybe the special features score. I'd give them a 2.5 or 3.

I personally thought the picture quality was only decent, it hardly impressed. It's not like it looks 'bad' by any means though.

Despite the intent, it looks only decent. You can't say something has 5/5 PQ when it does not stack up to other releases, even with director's intent unless it really shines.

I saw it in IMAX and had a great time. If you're more interested in the concert aspect of the disc, you won't be disappointed. It's a great live show. the other content is just filler in between.

did you get the opprotunity to see this while it was in the theatres, I DID, in fact while it was playing at work i saw it in parts every day for about 2 weeks, ontop of sitting down and watching it twice.
It looks just as good on bluray as it did being projected via 2k dlp projection at work.

take into account this was shot using several different types of cameras, from 16mm to highdef cameras.

now if this looked no where near as good as the theatrical presentation then thats one thing but thats not the case with this release.

I'm really surprised that the film itself got such a low score from Peter. On Rotten Tomatoes, it's at 87% Fresh. I missed this in theatres, but will definitely at least give it a rental.

Yeah the Paramount and Amazon thing is pretty ridiculous. It happened to The Ruins, to the May 20th releases (their first titles), Cloverfield, There Will BE Blood, and some others I can't remember as well.

Agreed. I just wrote my own review for the film actually (not up yet). Scorsese was making a pure concert film. The archive footage was just commentary on the fact that the Stones never expected to be doing what they're doing as long as they have mainly because they never took it that seriously. The archive stuff was not meant to document or shed light on the band. Shine a Light was basically a concert film for fans by a fan.

Scorsese showed in The Last Waltz that he knows how to conduct interviews and explore a band's history and chemistry if he wants to. He clearly was not going for that with Shine a Light. He is not stupid, he knows Gimme Shelter and Cocksucker Blues are out there as the true Rolling Stones documentaries (the former documenting their most noteworthy concert, the latter a behind the scenes type documentary).

Shine a Light is not Scorsese's best film by a long shot, but he perfectly captured what he was aiming for with this film.
