Default 'Zodiac (Dutch Import)' - High-Def Digest Review

Kenneth's review of the 'Zodiac (Dutch Import) has been posted. He's a big fan of the film. This Blu-ray features a great flick, stunning video and audio (five and four stars respectively), and thorough extras. A highly recommended import.

This was one of the first titles I bought on HD DVD. And nearly 70 titles later, it is still my favorite.

Excellent, excellent film. And a near perfect release.

I imported this title a couple weeks back and can't recommend it enough. Since Paramount's taking their sweet time releasing it domestically, I say go ahead and import it. You will not regret it.

Arrow Caution: Do not import. Wait for the U.S release.

Disc type: BD-50
Running time: 163 minutes
Movie size: 23.5 GB
Disc size: 39 GB
Average video bit rate: 16 Mbps
Audio : Dolby Digital 640 Kbps (No Lossless audio)

Zodiac Deciphered (54 min) - was presented in High Definition on HD DVD
Theatrical Trailer - was presented in High Definition on HD DVD

Paramount - HD DVD - 2 Disc Director's CUT - Disc one stats

Code:
Zodiac: Director's Cut AVC	2:42:27	25,788,141,568*~26,274,139,669	21.16	18.76	DDPlus 5.1 1536Kbps	No
HD DVD (HD-30 AVC) 25.78 GB - 19 Mbps vs Blu-ray (BD-50 VC-1) 23.5 GB - 16 Mbps

If memory serves me right, I think the HD DVD looked sharper than the BD which showed compression artefacts and banding.

Blu-ray (BD-50) - VC-1 - 23.6 GB @16 Mbps

These are the type of tiny things that go missing on the filtered encodes from Warner.

I am debating on getting the import, or waiting for a possibly upgraded domestic release...

Ahh, it was absolutely stunning on HD DVD, I should just get the import like the poster above suggested.

I'm kinda new on the whole Region coding thing, but can you guys confirm that this title will play on the PS3? Could it stop working one of these days because of an update?

I don't do imports but if I ever did, this would be the one. Top 10 all-time flick for me easily. This review makes me yearn for the US release as I've even resisted renting the DC DVD (so all those special features and the new cut will be fresh to me). I am hoping Benjamin Button's release (and hopefully impending acclaim) or Downey Jr.'s elevated status due to 'Iron Man' will help move this closer to the top of Paramount's queue for release stateside.

Well, I don't know. I thought the region-free movies was a temporary things that would be changed later on. Anyway, thanks, I ordered Zodiac from Xploited and will receive it in a couple of days. Very happy since it's my favorite movie of 2007.

Kenneth,

First off: fine review.

Second: you indicate that the documentary 'Zodiac Deciphered' is in standard-def on the BD, but it's in high-def on the HD DVD (U.S. release). Is it a typo, or is that feature truly in standard-def on this version of the release?
