Default 'Top Gun' - High-Def Digest Review

Peter's review of 'Top Gun' has been posted. He still thinks the film is pretty silly, but say this Blu-ray is no laughing matter -- it clearly trumps the HD DVD. Video is a match, but the DTS-MA track is superior, and there are tons of extras. This is the version to get.

I'll never understand the appeal of this film.

ok, i'm confused. Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HDMA are both lossless codecs. On this disc, both the TrueHD and DTS tracks are 24bit, so no word length truncation has been performed. So, both of those tracks, when decoded should be bit for bit identical. So how can the DTS track be better? Different masters? Someone screwed up encoding the TrueHD?
weird. they SHOULD be the same!

I've started skipping Peter's thoughts on the movies and going right to the video and audio quality section. Unless you are an uber film snob, your're probably not going to agree with most of his reviews.

Peter just has a personal vendetta against all 80's greats. He gave the Lost Boys 2 1/2 stars. His movie reviews hurt my soul.

I have this on HD DVD, but will double dip and it's nice to hear the DTS HD MA track is a bit stronger. I don't want to stir up anything, and I understand that both lossless tracks should be the same... but I just prefer the DTS since it typically just seems to sound a bit more full. Looking forward to getting this!

Even though the video got 4 stars, it still sounds a bit dissapointing based on how bad the master apparently was.

I never cared for this flick and agree on Quentin Tarantino's assessment.

And some people have the audacity to complain about 300 or Interview with a Vampire as being gay???

I agree. One of three explanations:
1) Different source masters
2) Dolby TrueHD is broken
3) DTS-HD MA is broken

On the latter two, I mean that the codecs are "cheating" and applying processing to the audio that's not supposed to be done, and the claims of lossless are false, or the decoders aren't doing something right--i.e., violating specifications.

Isn't it possible that:

4) DTS-MA has a higher bitrate that makes an audible difference, but there hasn't been a direct comparison until now?

Lossless is lossless is lossless. The track will get whatever bitrate is required to maintain lossless audio. If the bitrate constrains the source, then its not lossless anymore.
