Default 'The Mummy' - High-Def Digest Review

Peter's review of 'The Mummy' is up. He says it's not the greatest movie, but it's still a stylish Hollywood confection. This Blu-ray's video matches the previous HD DVD release, and adds in improved audio and supplements. Recommended.

I'm not suprised the video is on par with the HD DVD, however it's interesting that there seems to be a significant upgrade in audio with the DTS-MA. If there really is a significant upgrade in audio quality, I think you'll see some fence-sitters move upgrade from their HD DVD's.

This release is supposed to be remastered. Other reviews have stated that it has been cleaned up and there is a new encode from the HD DVD version. Just something to check into.

Does anyone know yet if these new Universal BDs are as gloriously region free as their HD DVD counterparts were?

Peter, has Universal ported over their sleek menus to Blu-ray?

Yeah, it's disappointing that Peter talks about "the same encode" as the HD DVD, when Universal themselves said it was remastered in the press materials. Several of his recent reviews show a shocking lack of awareness on what exactly is being presented.

Good point. I'm an audio fan, and I plan on upgrading certain titles that I really like, such as Serenity, Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, American Gangster, etc. A title such as The Bourne Ultimatum, since it uses a lossless audio track, is fine as it is. I might upgrade the first two, but I'm not sure yet. It'd be nice to have them as a set.

Not suprised there wasn't a remaster.

You'd replace Hot Fuzz? That is one of the best sound tracks, IMO, even if it's only DD+. It tops Transformers, IMO. I just don't think there's any room for improvement... Would be sweet if there was though.

I know this is rather geeky, and the expression has been pretty much accepted by the population at large nowadays...

But. This just drives me up the walls.

A light year is a distance, not an amount of time, damn it!

Yeah, I would. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but I've got some pretty expensive speakers. Want to feed em the best! Plus, as a catalog title, it's probably gonna be under $20. It's not a Fox release...

Think I will stick with my version. Dont think it is worth a double dip for the bonusview/pip feature alone.

The huge bump to real HD audio makes it worth it to me, unless you don't have the equipment to handle it....
