Default Dragon's Lair - High-Def Digest Review

Peter's exhaustive look at the new Blu-ray release of 'Dragon's Lair' is up, and it's quite a read. As a long-time fan of the game, he was ecstatic to see (and play) this "first-rate" restoration of the classic film/video game hybrid. But while this presentation is certainly more seamless than any previous home video release, Peter found two separate issues with the gameplay that could cause frustration for both newcomers and oldtimers alike.

Since this Blu-Ray is using BD-J, is BD-J good-to-go now for future releases for interactivity?

By/After October 31, 2007, all Blu-ray players must support BD-J, it will be mandatory, just like HDi is for HD DVD. That's what the BDA said.

So, I'm expecting a lot more BD-J based movies at the end of the year.

All players already support BD-J, the difference is that the 1.1 profile(PiP) becomes mandatory after October 31 in new players.

Note that 1.1 is a hardware profile, not a BD-J profile.

I pre-order this disk for a couple of reasons:

1. I am curious about the BD-J stuff with it and how it work2
2. It could be good test for BD-J
3. Well I am old fart and remember it.

By the way for PIP stuff, it really doesn't matter to me - buy I am sure that the PS3 can do it. It has a lot of power - especially when it does over 70% of Folding@Home work with 11% of cpus. It surely can handle PIP.

Did anyone with a stand alone player pick up this disc? Was curious what interactivity features may or may not have worked in reference to BD-J.

I'll answer my own question (for the curious): Netflix now rents the title on Blu-ray.

I buy this in a second if it weren't for the fact that the image is cropped from 4:3 to letterboxed for widescreen TVs. I fear they will do the same to my beloved Space Ace. They should've put two versions on the BRD, one with each aspect ratio. It's not like they don't have the extra room.

The deal breaker mentioned in the review is not a deal breaker at all. It is just like the arcade... you are pushed ahead a scene when you die. You don't stay at the same scene. The arcade was THE SAME WAY. Only on the home versions of Dragon's Lair, were you kept at the same scene until you passed it.
