Default 'Batman Begins' - High-Def Digest Review

Peter has reviewed the 'Batman Begins' Blu-ray. He says it may be better than all of the previous films in the series. This Blu-ray looks and sounds every bit as good as the previous HD DVD release, and the extras are a match, too. Recommended.

Yet another review with a few inconsistencies or nitpicks. Don't get me wrong I love the reviews here but once again the grading scale can be out of whack.

1. Why does the HD DVD have Highly Recommended and this only a Recommended?

2. The Blu-ray got 2 stars for High Def Extras while the HD DVD got 2 1/2 stars. The Blu-ray has every extra the HD DVD had PLUS MORE...the IMAX prologue. Why does it get a lower score???

3. Supplements. Same problem as above. Blu-ray got 2 1/2 stars while the HD DVD received 3 stars. Same stuff...different scores.

I was just about to post this as well. Not a big deal, but something I noticed.

I'm debating whether I should order this from Amazon, or just buy it Tuesday morning. I just ordered MGS4 yesterday from Amazon and it came today, so I'm wondering if I'd get it Monday if I ordered it from Amazon.

Expectations do improve as time goes on. I'm sure if titles from 2006 were reviewed now, they might see lower scores than they were given then. I don't think that's a problem...just what happens as people get more entrenched in something like this, and are able to compare on a wider level. I really doubt if the HD DVD were being reviewed right now, it would get the same score it did two years ago.

Nonetheless...can't wait to have this. The Dark Knight bit is a definite plus.

As for Batman Returns...I concur, I love that movie. Despite its pacing issues and some other flaws, what that film gets right...it does in spades. Granted, perhaps as a Batman movie it isn't the best, but as a Burton movie I love it.

A reason may be that at the time Batman Begins was released on HD-DVD, there were relatively few titles out, so by comparison to other discs available at the time, the HD-DVD was praised slightly higher. Batman Begins on Blu-Ray has arrived much later, and the standards of the reviewers on this site have undoubtedly changed since they have had a lot more titles to review since then. Their benchmark has gotta be higher these days, I guess.

What you guys are saying makes sense but jeez I figured the IMAX prologue would at least give it a better score in the high def extras area. But still I will always have the nitpicking problem with the reviews I like consistency. I still love reading the reviews though keep up the great work despite the, IMO, wacky grading scale.

Well, I'm sure we all have our nitpicks on the scoring. It always bothered me that extras actually being IN HD isn't one of the most important factors in the HD extras score...yet, on this site, it's not even a factor at all, let alone one of the most important.

But...as long as you know where they're coming from and don't believe there's any dishonesty, I don't have a problem. The real meat of the review is in the text anyway, not the stars.
