Default 'Gangs of New York' - High-Def Digest Review

Josh's review of 'Gangs of New York' has been posted. He says the film may fall short of its aspirations, but its still a must see for followers of Scorsese's career. This Blu-ray has a downright terrible video transfer. Stick with a rental on this one.

Terrible video transfer? I love the movie and I expected this movie to have an awesome video transfer but looks like I'm scratching this one off the "Must Have" list. Thanks for the review.

All in all, the 'Gangs of New York' Blu-ray is a travesty. It might look acceptable on a small screen -- in fact, I played it on a 17" LCD monitor while I was listening to the audio commentary, and it looked pretty good there; the edge enhancement was still visible, but not quite as distracting at that size -- but any decently-sized home theater display will magnify its flaws.

I suppose it will be quite visible on my 42" then.

Pretty pissed about the transfer, but it is an upgrade over the SD even if not immensley, so I'll get it and hope for a disc replacement program from Disney.

As for the review of the film itself, I'll just say that GoNY is Scorsese's Godfather Part III in terms of popular opinion engulfing the actual merits of the work.

Booo!

I will have to wait and see about this one, as I expect a fixed version to come out.

Thumbs down, Disney!

Pisses me off. I sold my SD version awhile back in anticipation of the blu-ray. I'll hope it comes to a pawn shop or movie exchange place locally and buy it then I guess. Freddy

Wow, I have never seen the film but with all of the shoddy reviews regarding the film itself and the suspect quality.... I might not even rent it. It sounds like its quite a chore to sit through it at almost 3 hours. Plus, I cant stand the UN-talented Leo DiCrappio and if I can skip something with him in it, I will.

No biggy, there are plenty of other good films coming up soon.

So let me ask. Why does alot of shit ass movies have good PQ and alot of decent movies have mediocre or shit ass PQ?

Are some studios doing this on purpose releasing good movies like this thinking people will buy it and down the road like a year or 2 later release the same movie(s) with better PQ and adding some extras to make more money? WTF is wrong with these studios?

They are doing the same fucking thing with DVDs where they have like 3 version of the same movies.

How did people get Sony to re-master the Fifth Element? Letter/email writing campaign? Because I would love to do the same with Disney and get a better version of this film.

I have to say, I disagree very strongly with the reviewer here on the quality of the movie. It is one of my favorite movies of all time and I think that any movie that receives 10 Academy Award nominations, regardless of what you think about the AA process, is a pretty good film. Picture Quality aside, Gangs of New York is a terrific movie and should be seen by everyone at least once. Daniel Day-Lewis' performance, as usual, is reason enough to see the movie. It is one of his best, he is a great villain, but commands respect and admiration at the same time. I doubt any other actor could have pulled off such a great feat as well as he did. I also think DiCaprio is a great actor in the film.

Basically, I think you should give it a chance. I think you will be pleasantly surprised, especially since you are now going in with lowered expectations. Even with the so-so PQ, I think it will look a lot better than its DVD counterpart.

Fair enough, although academy award stuff is completely useless to me since I end up hating plenty of "acclaimed" movies. Anyways...it will prolly find it way into my Nutflix queue someday.

bloom is off Disney's rose on this one.
time for the studios to get a clear and very loud message--catalogs either receive a new master or don't get released.
simple as that.
