Default Metropolis Coming to Blu-ray in 2009!

Quote:
Kino International has revealed that they are bringing the 1927 Fritz Lang silent film 'Metropolis' to Blu-ray sometime in 2009. The film, which was painfully restored by Kino in 2001, is often credited with starting the Sci-Fi genre. At this point in planning, it is too early to speculate about technical specs, but special features should be similar to the DVD release.

'Metropolis' is often recognized as a major influence of more recent Sci-Fi classics, such as '2001: A Space Odyssey', 'Blade Runner', 'Dark City', 'The Matrix', and even 'Star Wars'. For its time, it was one of the most elaborate and expensive films ever made, equivalent to approximately $200M today.

As one of the best films ever made, many Blu-ray fans are eagerly anticipating the high definition release of this classic film.

We need more films like this on Blu. To counter all the crap like Semi-Pro, Meet the Spartans, The Eye, Step Up 2, etc.

a fritz Lang Blu boxset would be even better, but maybe that's asking a bit too much at this point in time.
great news though!

Kick ass. I'll be waiting for this one!

Now, if studios can only be convinced to release the Mabuse movies, early Hitchcock, the films of Howard Hawks...

Likewise. The Metropolis anime is great, and was released on BD In Japan a while back, but with a very mediocre transfer.

This is great news, their disc is the best version of the film I've seen.

I'm interested. I've seen Metropolis, but it was several years ago and I'm curious to know what the restored version looks like. I'm fairly positive that I watched it pre-2001.

It wouldn't be a film I watch often, but I do want to support classic and non-blockbuster titles on BD - I really don't get much from the deluge of summer films pouring out of the studios at present.
