Default 'Dragon Ball Z - Dead Zone/World's Strongest' - High-Def Digest Review

Kenneth's review of 'Dragon Ball Z - Dead Zone/World's Strongest' has
been posted. He's not a fan of the series, but says this will appeal
to diehard fans. This Blu-ray's remastered video transfer looks quite
good, but print damage and other issues hold it back from greatness.
The audio package is also a mixed bag. Aside of an entertaining audio
commentary track, this one is definitely for established fans.

Movie itself is not a 2 and this is a must buy for me.

I'll give it a rent like the Broly dbl feature. Was a huge fan of the TV series. I agree with the reviewer that if you're new to DBZ it can be very confusing to jump in any old place in the stories.

I just got this in at work today, so I can't wait to see how it is from my eyes.

I did like Dead Zone a lot, so all I'm expecting is better picture quality.

I loved both of these movies - they were my first original DVD purchases about a million years ago.

One thing the reviewer seems to miss in this and the other DBZ review is that the films are original 1:33 ratio and on Blu-Ray they have been cropped to create a widescreen aspect ratio. IMO that's kind of bad. What do you guys think?

Really? That is distressing. Could you post a source for this info so I can check it out and update the reviews accordingly?

Thanks as always for bringing these sorts of details to our attention!

While they are cropped like the recent TV show releases, this is not an issue (for the movies anyways).

These movies were done open matte, framed for 16:9, but animated 4:3.

I don't recall which movie it was, but in one of them, in the 4:3 version, legs aren't even drawn under the widescreen 'bar'.

Although these movies were not remastered from the original Japanese masters, but from a 2nd or 3rd generation copy.

Toei did ludicrously awesome remasters a few years ago for the Japanese market, instead we are getting a 'mock' remaster with little actually work done in 'remastering' them, but Toei's remastered versions were in widescreen also, since that was how they were meant to be seen.

I watched Dead Zone last night, and it looks much better than it ever has. Yes, there is a lot of scratches and dirt, but if you are a fan, I'd say go ahead and get it. The sound is awesome, and the Japanese track is equally nice (but being spoiled by the American track, I couldn't stand to listen to the Japanese).

I can't stand the dub, the voices are so stupid. Some are ok, but if you can look me in the eye and tell me that muten roshi, king ki, freeza and android 16 and fat buu are good dubs your smoking crack. These and the new dvds of the show look great but the mono japanese track is a joke. Some people prefer japanese over english.

Also how many people is christopher sabot dub on that show? Half the cast?

Here ya go! All of the DBZ movies were made in 1:33. Not sure what Godofchaos is talking about - his post is worded strangely.

So yes, these movies being presented in widescreen seems to be the same as the "widescreen" version of Ninja Scroll.

For some odd reason, the little booklet in my Dead Zone Blu-ray states that the movies are being presented in their original widescreen format.

I think you are thinking about the TV show. It was made in 1.33:1.

I've watched this movie so many times, I know it's not cropped.

Oh it was in the booklet oh wow that clears it up.. Oh wait, funimation said that, wrong and wrong good sir. The last guy is right they hell'a crop the new dvds and the movies for a lame fake "remaster". Your just another wagon cartoon network fan, go watch some robot chicken. You wanna buy an acre on my jellybean farm?
