'Back to the Future' fans got a sneak peek this past weekend at an apparently in-the-works Blu-ray release of the '80s favorite.

As first reported by the fansite BTTF.com, 'Future' producer Bob Gale surprised fans at a special screening near Orlando with a new digital remaster of the flick, which he said had been produced for an eventual release on Blu-ray.

"What you're going to be seeing today is the digital master for the upcoming high-definition Blu-ray version of 'Back to the Future,'" Gale told the crowd. "I don't know when it's coming out yet, but I was involved in the mastering of this tape, so I can tell you that it looks absolutely beautiful!"

Gale also spoke to potential supplemental features on a Blu-ray version of the trilogy, saying only that never-before-seen bonus materials may appear, though he stopped short of offering any specifics

At press time Universal had not confirmed nor denied plans for a 'Future' release on Blu-ray, but as always we'll keep you updated as any official news comes in.

Not the director but the writer/producer....

And Merrick is right, this is story has nothing new. The news in April was exactly the same then as it is now.... there was a screening and at the screening Gale made some comments about a Blu-ray release.

bttf.com broke the story on April 23rd - read it, it's fairly inforvative.

Still I'm not really complaining... well maybe a little - I want a news item that states it's coming not 'in-the-works'. BTTF is my most wanted title on Blu-ray and I anxiously await its release.

Later in the discussion, an audience member asked Gale the eventual question of whether the infamous Eric Stoltz footage would be seen on Blu-ray.

"No, we get that one a lot — why wasn't it included on the old DVD and why it won't be on the new one. It's because Eric Stoltz is a working actor," Gale explained. "We made a mistake putting him in the movie — it's not his fault. But seeing the footage makes him look bad, and it doesn't make us look too good either. We don't want to put something out there that's gonna make somebody look bad. We didn't destroy the footage — it's still out there and we know it has historical significance. But maybe in another 20 years we can put that out there, but we don't want to anything out there that's gonna hurt somebody."
