Default Monster House - High-Def Digest

Peter Bracke on Monster House:

'Monster House' is both scary and cute, the kind of movie innocuous enough for the younger set to watch, but still cool enough for adults to enjoy. Overall, I was impressed with this Blu-ray release -- a very fine transfer and soundtrack deliver the goods, and the extras are solid too (though the commentary track is a total mess). Otherwise, this is well worth checking out, especially this Halloween as alternative viewing to all those slasher flicks and remakes of Japanese horror movies.

I love this movie so much I had to buy it. It's adventurous like the Goonies and fanciful like Sandlot.

I found it a bit creepy as well. I'm surprised it's marketed to kids.

Question

Is this a noticeable upgrade from the standard dvd release? I absolutely love this film but, the standard dvd looks quite nice.....I'm looking for a dramatic difference! Thanks

I actually saw this in the theater. It was not billed as being quite so evil.
I must admit, I got creeped out by it. I would have been totally freaked out by this when I was a kid. Like when the old man keels over, and all you see is his eye twitching. EEwwww.

I picked up the BD a couple of days ago, I love this movie. I was not blown away by the transfer however, as the synthetic grain added seemed to suck the detail out of the picture. I'm not one of these 'no grain' fanatics, quite the opposite, but it didn't need to be there. Not a crap transfer, not even an average one, but still disappointing for a CG animated movie.

I watched this last night and was blown away by the soundtrack in uncompressed 5.1. WOW is all I can say. The picture quality was a bit soft but the soundtrack more than made up for it. Agressive use of the Sub and surrounds made it an enveloping experience. I was worried my neighbours would be p'd off with me for the amount of bass on tap. I have a Velodyne HGS15 sub, and whilst it's getting on a bit, this baby has now truly come to life with HD sound. SD DVD would deliver great bass, but HD sound brings it home by the truck load. To say my sleeping giant has been awakened is an understatement. I'm glad I've converted to Blu Ray now when you get soundtracks like this. After this I watched I am legend. And whilst the DOLBY TRUE HD track was good. Monster house blew it away. 5 stars for the audio.
