Default 'Face/Off' - High-Def Digest Review

Kenneth's review of 'Face/Off' has been posted. He enjoyed the film and
says this Blu-ray showcases an excellent video transfer (only marred
by some pesky DNR), a powerful 6.1 DTS audio track, and a healthy
collection of supplements. Fans will be extremely happy. Recommended.

Default Face Off

The picture from the HD DVD is amazing for Face Off, too good in fact. In one or two scenes, wires were very visable. Aside from that, I highly recommend this hi def release.

This was a great movie in HD DVD, I'm sure the bluray with the DTS track will rock. I can tell you that the DD+ track (the one I usually select) sounded absolutly fantastic.

Just out of curiosity, why did the # of stars drop buy half a star? Shouldn't it score just as good with the same DTS track?

Mainly because the HD DVD version offered two tracks of similar, impressive quality, while the Blu-ray version has a flatter Dolby Digital mix (at least by my estimation). I thought it was wise to reflect this discrepency in the overall score, even though it didn't affect the bottom line, my experience with the fantastic DTS track, or my overall recommendation.

Hope that helps clarify things. Thanks as always for posting!

Wait a second, it gets over 4 stars and has the same DNR'd transfer as the HD DVD? Fuck off!! The HD DVD looked terrible, are we apologists now that it's on blu?

I think you should include this explanation in the review. I had the same question. Your HD DVD review doesn't really make mention of the DD+ track all that much. I looked in that review to see if there was an explanation for the difference in half a star, and expected to see something like "The DD+ track just edges the DTS track."

When you said the DTS track is better, I couldn't think of a reason for difference in the score, and think most people won't make the connection either.

The first paragraph of my BD audio review discusses my experience with the Blu-ray's DD track and my opinion that it is flatter than the DD+ track on the HD DVD version (not to mention both the BD and HD's comparable DTS tracks).

Likewise, my HD DVD review makes it clear that both the DD+ and DTS tracks on the HD version are equally impressive -- a compliment I couldn't pay to the BD version. I understand the slight confusion considering the number of tracks in question, but that's what makes the message boards so convenient! Either way, you can rest assured that the 'Face/Off' audio experience is fantastic.

Thanks as always for posting!

My review of the HD DVD transfer received the same score -- the transfers are identical.

Regardless, aside from a handful of waxy shots, the DNR on 'Face/Off' isn't nearly as distracting as doomsayers have made it out to be.

But to each his own! The score may be higher than you would prefer, but I hope my text arms people with the appropriate facts so those sensitive to DNR can adjust their expectations and opinions accordingly. Thanks for posting.

I was thinking for people who don't read the message boards.

I just wanted to let you know that why the deduction was made was not clear to me from the reviews themselves, and it might be nice to add that in there for everyone.

oh i agree, Face/Off hd dvd looked pretty good, all things considered. sure it wasn't a 5 star, but it was FAR better than many titles in terms of PQ, especially for a title that's aged over 10 years now.
