Default 'The Last Sentinel' - High-Def Digest Review

Kenneth's review of 'The Last Sentinel' has been posted. He's not
pulling any punches, calling it an appalling flick with a repulsive
video transfer, a pair of mediocre audio tracks, and a bland and
anemic supplement package. 'The Last Sentinel' is a Blu-ray release
to avoid.

I grabbed this while at frys picking up some much better discs on sale. For 7.50, I couldn't resist. It gave me and my friends enough laughs to justify the price, but unless you're REALLY into shitty sci-fi channel movies, this isn't worth it.

Now "Warbirds", THAT is a shitty sci fi channel movie worth buying.

The review was far more entertaining than it sounds like the movie is.

If you take it for what it is, it's not THAT bad, sounded good through my onkyo 805, and any excuse to see her in her underwear is fine with me.

I bought this at Fry's because it was cheap. The term 'you get what you pay for' applies here.

Hey at least it isn't triple-quadruple the price that "One Missed Call" is.

Actually, it's good to have Echo Bridge on the market, with the prices they are using, we now have a budget line for blu-ray very early in the game, and that's important for the market for people to be able to see some titles out there for 10 bucks or under. And I think they will do very well with sales, Echo Bridge does have some decent titles in their library, which is quite large. 2 of my guilty pleasures are 10.5 Apocalypse and 7.5 End of the World. I got those 2 from Amazon on a special together somewhere near 14.00 for both with free shipping. The transfers of the 2 are surprisingly very good high def picture transfers and those 2 do have PCM tracks, 7.5 sounds great in PCM stereo, but I think something is wrong with 10.5 because all I can get is a mono type sound, and on my video-tape recording it is truly stereo...I wrote Echo Bridge about the problem but they didn't respond. Being a disaster flick fan, they were worth it because some nice special effects are contained and I didn't find the 2 disaster flicks as bad as some people did, in fact my family thought they were very exciting and tense for their 3 hours each (both were 2-part tv miniseries). I will at least give some of Echo's product a rent, because they have many unreleased titles that are actually well rated quality films in their library and to be honest, it tickles me to buy a blu-ray for $7.98, though I won't just buy anything. The Last Sentinal doesn't sound like my cup of tea though-hehe. They need to release the original 6.0 or 7.5, whichever it was which is where the 7.5 and 10.5 series started. 7.5 is actually a sequel.

The thing with Echo Bridges titles is the quality, given what they are working with is actually quite good. Now look at the pricing. Considering they are probably using the same plants as every other studio how can they release titles so cheap? People cant say blu ray titles are expensive because of the high production costs of a new technology if Echo Bridge can do a disc for $10 and still make a profit.

Why cant Sony or WB release their older catelog titles that they are not giving the special edition treatment to at a $9.99 like SD titles.

You are right on with that one. What I am hearing in the industry is that this time around, the major studios do not want blu-rays ending up in Walmart sales bins in the middle of an isle in a big box for some insane give-away price. I think that's the main reason. But I agree with you in that catalog titles should not be priced at $39.95 unless you are getting a very very special edition. Also to be considered is that to restore a classic title to blu-ray quality, much work needs to be done in the process. So far, as I understand it, sales were extremely low for hd-dvd titles like Casablanca, Robin Hood, ect...somewhere in the 5,000 range. This would not re-coup the money spent to do a high def transfer plus all of the film scanning and fixing of prints/negatives. When the market opens up and they are able to reach more catalog fans, and they sell much more in quantity, I think these titles will come down. Of course, if Warner can release Twister and Risky Business special editions and Battle of the Buldge, ect...for $28.95 retail, it sure makes you wonder why Fox would charge 39.95 for Butch Cassidy, Longest Day,ect. The studios want blu-ray to replace dvd, I feel they are going to have to become more agressive with their catalog pricing. I am not asking for the echo-bridge range, but 19.95-29.95 retail would at least put it in availability on sales for 14.95-19.95, and I think they would sell more copies.

I have the feeling that starting with the holidays this year, with more players sold, more titles released, there will be many more sales, reductions of suggested retail prices and many more catalog releases. Bill Hunt has stated on his site that 2009 is really going to see the floodgates open for catalog titles. That's when I will be going broke, lol, especially pre-1970 stuff.

The films these guys have been releasing aren't the best.I think Blackbeard wasn't too bad but there are a lot of good sci-fi originals and other 'b' movies that i love so keep 'em coming.
I hardly ever watch 'blockbuster' movies and the ones i do watch already have remastered versions so i can handle as many 'b's as they put out.
