Thumbs up 'Black Hawk Down' -- High-Def Digest review

Checked out 'Black Hawk Down' tonight:

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/blackhawkdown.html

Good news is that it looks and sounds great to superb. However, the extras are not as extensive as expected. The Blu-Wizard function is also intriguing, if a bit in its infancy. Still, you have to at least rent this one just to check it out...

"But without a doubt, this is a strong battle cry for the BD-50 -- it is hard to imagine 'Black Hawk Down' could have looked this good had it been crammed on a single-layer Blu-ray disc."

Another cracking review Peter!

I'm a big fan of BHD and have been eagerly awaiting this review for months. It's a shame to see that the extras are not as extensive as they could have been - maybe a factor of using the MPEG-2 codec, although even in spite of this I would have thought there would be enough room?

Phantom Of The Opera had more features and higher ratings than Black Hawk Down.

I have to agree with your point, I was somewhat surprised too about the lack of features given that this is a BD-50. It just reinforces my belief that the extra 20Gb is superfluous and that it is only the fanboys that will talk about BD-50’s giving any kind of real advantage over a 30Gb HD-DVD.

I do wonder though, whether if it had been encoded in AVC, whether they would have included more extras?

I completely agree with MovieMinded. Sony touted these BD-50 discs for ages saying fans would TRULY see what Blu-Ray is all about once these hit the market.

Well it seems like the only worthy title thus far is 'Unforgiven' matching the features, video, and audio on the HD DVD counterpart.

No sense in offering more space on your disc if you don't use it. This version of BHD cries out double dip to me.

Can anyone compare BHD on BluRay to the Superbit version? Glad I still have the 3 disc edition as well.

Thanks.......

BTW, I thought format bashing wasn't allowed in this area. Moderators?

BHD gets a good review, and guess who comes out of the woodworks to bash it,...HD DVD fanboys. Seems like you guys are going to be working overtime, as I see many good reviews to come.

Great review, glad to see this is a good transfer and that BD50s are justifiably going to make our HD experience better.

Nice.

I cleaned the thread up.

This thread is for discussing the review of Black Hawk Down, the movie Black Hawk Down and I suppose we should allow discussion about if this movie made good use of a BD50 or not.

No discussion of BD50 vs HD DVD30 or Blu-ray vs HD DVD is allowed here.

I like this Blu-Wizard stuff so far. I will enjoy it I am sure.

My best friend from high-school is crazy about this movie, even before he joined the Army. It is an ok film, but I will not buy it.

The review makes this disc sound like a winner to me. I've got it on order, it'll be one of my very first BDs. Very much looking forward to it. It's already a favorite movie of mine.

Well in terms of the picture and sound quality that definitely seems to be the case. Tbh I'm not one for extras anyway so happy that the pq got a thumbs up!

Me too, never cared for extras. PQ and AQ of the movie are all that matter to me.

I watched the movie and noticed that it had a little bit of greenish tint overall (just like the matrix). Is this what the reviewer was referring to when he said...

"Yes, the film is quite processed -- colors are tweaked to high heaven to give the intended stylistic effect (heavy orange filters in daylight, impossibly deep blues and greens at night, etc.) "
