Default 'Before The Devil Knows You're Dead' - High-Def Digest Review

Kenneth's review of 'Before the Devil Knows You're Dead' has been posted. He says it's a challenging masterpiece from director Sidney Lumet. This Blu-ray is just as impressive, boasting a striking video transfer and a noteworthy DTS HD MA track. Extras include a commentary and a behind-the-scenes featurette that are almost as interesting as the film itself. Recommended.

Good to hear. I bought it on release date because of the price (discount was huge on this title for some reason) and for my man crush on Philip Seymour Hoffman. The man's the deal. Good to see my purchase appears to be justified. Now I need to find time to watch it.

Really looking forward to seeing this one, as I haven't gotten around to viewing it as of yet. Judging from Kenneth's review, it would seem there's a good chance that I'll enjoy this one.

I was a big fan of this film. It definitely shows it's roots in HD. I'm learning to like "HD filmed" content. I still have a problem with the "movement". It still feels a tad unnatural.

I wasn't a big fan on the transitions. They called a little to much attention. But like what the reviews said over at DVDtalk...it doesn't occupy much of the film.

Usually I'm opposed to the idea of people on this forum blind-buying a movie just from a recommendation from HDD alone, but in this case I can't help but be a little biased. I saw this in theaters after hearing some buzz about it and it was entirely gripping. I wasn't quite sure what to expect at first but was extremely pleased with what it turned out to be. Ethan Hawke and Phillip Seymour Hoffman really shine in their performances. I definitely recommend this to any who might even be slightly interested. If you think you may not like it.. give it a rent and try it out. Don't overlook this.

A couple of quibbles with the review: Lumet has never won a competitive Oscar (he did receive an Honorary award a few years ago). And, I couldn't disagree more with the laudatory remarks regarding the commentary track. It was basically a "mutual admiration society" type track, and I learned very little from it, which was disappointing as I was a big fan of the film.

I had heard great things about this film and now with this 5-star review, I'm so glad that I pre-ordered it.

I'll watch it this weekend.

i agree with kenneth, an unbelievable film with great performances by psh and ethan hawke.

i agree with kenneth on psh, i didnt start getting into movies until january of 07, before then i've always been like anybody else, like to see movies but not a movie buff. when m:i:iii came out in spring of 06, i couldnt wait, i was already a big fan of the series but i was pissed that psh was the main antagonist (at that time, the only movies i knew him from were twister [very minor role], and along came polly where he is very fun but not a big bad guy). after i watched mi-3, my mindset on hoffman completley changed, he was so cold, so intimidating, so scary and brutal in the movie, mission impossible 3 became by far my favorite of the 3, with a big reason being that he was by far the best antagonist. now, after i got into films, i've seen alot more of his work and this film is just as good as mi3 with hoffmans performance, as the movie starts to wind up to the ending, his character just about falls off the map completely into insanity, and its very, very believable.
