Default Sony Commits to BD-50; Says No 'Da Vinci' Blu-ray 'Til 2008

As part of Sony's press blitz commemorating the 100,000 units shipped for 'Casino Royale' on Blu-ray, the distributor broke its silence on two subjects that have been of keen interest to Blu-ray fans -- BD-50 disc adoption and 'The Da Vinci Code.'

Sony is obviously having issues with getting the disc to work and instead of setting a date and then delaying it like Fox they are simply waiting till BD-Java is working. Any retailer that receives press information from the studios can tell you that the original retailer ads for Da Vinci Code and The Grudge 2 both said "DVD & Blu-Ray Day and Date", but Sony then delayed both titles indefinately. It's clear that it's not about the audience not being with Blu-Ray yet. Blu-Ray is still having issues with advanced features and that is delaying alot of titles. Fox's titles don't even have any features and they are getting delayed.

Something is definately up with Blu-Ray if Da Vinci isn't coming out till 2008 now.

wait wait.... Because 1 movie is being delayed, there is something up with Blu-ray.

Wow. that almost makes sense....except the sense part...

And their reasoning actually makes sense. The Majority of Blu-ray owners are currently probably younger viewers. It can be PS3 owners or those with nice HD setups that wanna show off their setup with some nice action movie. But as more of consumers switch over with the lowered price players in the next year and the related movie to DaVinci comes out, perfect time to blitz them both

I guess Sony want to make a bigger profit out of The Da Vinci Code and think it will have a bigger impact if it is announced together with Angels and Demons. They have never announced it for this year so they have never postponed it and have no problem with it. Sony are releasing plenty of movies already.

I agree. How could blu-ray have problems and then release movies every week like the puruit of happyness, rocky, ect.

yea....it just makes no sense. Either Blu-ray works or it dosent...and it seems like Sony has had a fairly solid track record with their Blu-ray releases so im going to have to assume with the 40 Blu-rays I own, that....Blu-ray works.

I think it great news to be commited to BD50 - all of them should be this way - maybe some really shorts stuff with no extra features.

Da Vinci - not a big deal - Another political driven movie - no big deal.

1 good movie, 10 bad, etc. That is what I have been seeing from blu-ray titles. They want to make more $$$ from their low gross titles from us early adopters. Don't support their marketing schemes, if anything they should give us early adopters the rewards of buying HD. What good is an improved format without improved content? I for one am not happy about seeing only 5 movies I want out of next 50 releases. Pathetic

Somebody loved the movie at the cinemas.

Worldwide gross: $758,239,851 (thats $758mill)

Think this is a smart move from Sony.

The book version was great, and millions of people love it - probably why the movie made so much money, base just on people's curiosity of how the live action version will be like. Not to mention all the controversies and free publicity.

I love the book and am a big fan of Ron Howard and Tom Hanks...but this movie is horrendous. It's the worst movie adaptation of a book that I've ever seen and read.

And they're making "Angels & Demons" into a movie? That book and the Da Vinci Code basically have the same plot line and structure...just different location and "secret". Those who have read both books would understand.
