Default 'Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story' - High-Def Digest Review

Peter's review of 'Walk Hard' has been posted. He says its an amusing satire, but not laugh-out-loud hilarious. This Blu-ray has a problematic video transfer, much better audio, and a TON of extras. Worth a rental.

I've had this preordered for a while and I'm leaving it that way.

I'm still looking forward to this one even with the piss poor review.

From the reviews and word of mouth, this is either love it or hate it. I didn't see it in the theater, but the previews and the cast lead me to believe I'll fall in the "love it" column. Mine is also on preorder, can't wait to watch it when it arrives

I dont know. Another website gave this disc glowing reviews...even a 5 star rating for pq. I am going to read some more reviews before I decide on this one. Pass...for now.

Is the PQ more like Superbad in the terms of WAY to pumped up? I was disappointed in this review. you never mentioned Jenna Fischer! I'm buying it come tuesday.

I liked it when I saw it in theatres and it looks like they went all out on the extras. So still a buy for me.

Video 94/100

The 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoding presented here had an average bitrate of 26 mbps and was of reference quality. This is an extremely dynamic and visually arresting video presentation. Detail is superbly rendered with three dimensional depth, crisp lines and lifelike texture. Contrast levels are spot on with excellent delineation within brightly lit scenes containing bright white and gray tones. Colors are oversaturated with primaries that lean toward warmer tones. I found them to be pleasing overall and not distracting. Fleshtone reproduction varied from pale to lifelike. Several of the female cast members were pasty white which made darker colored lipstick appear exaggerated. This was less of an issue with the male cast who for the most part appeared more lifelike and natural. Shadow delineation was rendered with aplomb as it offered excellent acuity, and depth within dark areas and low light scenes. I saw no signs of compression or video related anomalies. If I had to sum this one up in one word, I would describe it as pristine. Transfers like this are the reason that we as enthusiasts strive so hard to make high definition blu-ray the successor to DVD as THE household name in home video. Kudos to Sony on a job well done.

The Video

The 1080p Blu-ray widescreen transfer is excellent. Color fidelity is fine throughout and the picture is sharp and crystal-clear. There is minimal grain and I observed no problems with digital artifacts or edge enhancement. The producers built some wonderful sets for the musical numbers and they look absolutely terrific. Black levels are excellent and shadow detail is quite good. This is a first-class Blu-ray release by Sony.

Just got this, and have to say the PQ is a lot better than the review here would say. It's at minimum a 4/5, 4.5 in my book.

I wouldn't say "worth a look" is a piss-poor review, but I agree with others who say this PQ review is a bit underrated. I was expecting to be totally underwhelmed with the PQ. Instead -- having read this review ahead of time -- I was pleasantly surprised with how great it looked! To the poster here who said he would probably just pick up the SD, I would give this a rent on BD first and judge it for myself. This is why I don't trust just one website for my BD reviews. You can generally get a good idea about a disc by taking into account about 3 or 4 trusted reviewers. I always check here, DVD Talk, and DVD Beaver for instance.
