Default 'Initial D' - High-Def Digest Review

Josh's review of 'Initial D' is up. He says the movie is lightweight entertainment, fun but insubstantial. The Blu-ray has decent picture, terrific sound, and a bunch of fluffy supplements. This one's a rental.

I never seen this live action version. I think I'll pick it up for the audio.

Really would love to have seen this movie include PCM 7.1 24 bit 48khz at least, or with DTS Master Audio 7.1 24bit48khz Lossless as an upgrade from my reference DVD with DTS ES 6.1 Discrete 1.5mbps... oh well, probably a licensing issue from DTS...

Still just for the movie in HD, this movie deserves a buy more than a rental imo

I really didn't like this movie very much especially since I'm a fan of the anime series. The blurring of the license plate makes it seem like an Asian COPS episode. Anthony Wong just didn't seem like the right fit for Takumi's dad as well.

Well I just bought this on Amazon. I have never seen this but I'm basically expecting an asian version of the Fast & The Furious. I try to buy at least one title from each company releasing on Blu-ray to see what each is doing with their releases.

EDIT: Just read the review again. So let me get this straight. The movie takes place in Japan, yet all the characters speak Cantonese? Except for actress Anne Suzuki who is apparently speaking Japanese yet is dubbed in Cantonese anyway? Is Cantonese the original language track for this release?

EDIT 2: Argh shit I'm already starting to have buyers remorse with this title! Stupid Amazon is processing my order and won't let me cancel or make changes to my order...

That is all correct. This was a Hong Kong production, but set in and filmed in Japan. You know, kind of like how Hollywood makes movies set in foreign countries yet everyone only speaks English.

Thats true. Memoirs of a Geisha comes to mind.

Though its the dubbing that gets me. I hate dubbing in any form.

I agree, but for what it's worth, that actress doesn't have a very large role. Most of her screen time is spent looking cute and giggling.

just wanted to let you know that the "whore" parts of the story was in the original manga and anime so it wasn't made up for the movie. it was better developed in the anime series because they had more time. i wish the movie didn't include that aspect from the original story cuz they didn't have any time with it.

btw, i hated this movie simply because i loved the anime so much. i felt the acting and changes in the story were terrible. Anthony Wong is the only good actor in the entire film but he's not a drunk in the anime/manga which changed the character entirely.

Yeah, there may have been a point to that storyline in the manga or anime, but in the movie it seems to come from out of the blue. As you say, they should have dropped it.
