Default 'Sleuth' - High-Def Digest Review

Kenneth's review of 'Sleuth' is up. He says the film starts out well, but takes a few wrong turns. This Blu-ray release fares a bit better, with above average video, a strong TrueHD track, and a decent collection of supplements. Still, rent this one first.

Call me crazy, but I'm excited about seeing this. Michael Caine can sometimes make garbage look desirable.

I'll reserve my judgement until after I view it.

I understand what you are saying. Caine does up the quality factor when he is in a particular film. But...this one never did anything for me when I watched the trailer. Looks like a snoooozzzzzeee fest, imho. All others... enjoy. I think I will pass on this one. Let us know how you liked it. Maybe I will give it a shot if you and other members think it is good.

Yeah, I will do that. I thought it looked intriguing personally, but I'll give my honest assessment after I've seen it.

Can someone spoil the twists for me? I'll be skipping this one but Ken's reaction to the twist is priceless and now i'm dying to know what it was.

Rent the original from 1972 with Sir Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine. It's much better than this remake.

same here! The trailer was intresting and it has gotten a 49% on Metacritic which isn't that bad, also the A-list actors!

Yeah, unfortunately for some reason or another, I never got around to seeing it. I'd really like to see it at some point in the future. Just one of those things, so many movies out there.

I rented it.
THe chemistry is sooo intense.
I love this short film!!
OK!

Lets just cut to the chase and say that I love this short film..
Im calling it a short film because of one reason and one reason alone:
STOP WATCHING AFTER 35 MINUTES!! You will be satisfied.
If you want to not get hit over the head by a stupid ending and also being called stupid by trying to cover up a costume. ugh.

Those first 35 minutes are so intense, amazing, and just great.

If this was a short at a film festival,, its pure gold..

So here we go:

Movie(35 minutes) - 4.5/5
PQ: 4/5
AQ: 4/5
Overall: Enjoy the film, stop at 35 minutes.

I finally got around to watching this. Since this film has been smattered with some negativity, I wanted to see if it actually might be a diamond in the rough (as some movies tend to be that aren't met with high praise). Also, to be honest with you, it had Michael Caine in it, so I thought no matter what kind of movie awaited he might be able to transcend rubbish into decency. God, was I ever wrong! The first ten minutes, I'm telling myself, "so far, so good". Around the fifteen to twenty mark, I was thinking to myself, "this will get better". It never got better, and in fact it kept getting worse with each new "surprise". That's the rub of it, the movie has about as many thrilling moments as taking a child to a petting zoo. I was bored stiff, pretty much throughout it's entirety.

I don't mind a slow moving film under normal circumstances, but this movie just did nothing for me whatsoever. This was the first movie since my adolescence, wherein I actually felt my eyelids dropping down. I had to make a concerted effort to stay awake. It could be attributed to a long day at work, but much as I said, that hasn't happened to me while watching a movie since I was a kid. I tend to think it was the movie itself. I seriously can't recall a movie that I've seen from recent memory, which seemed to get progressively worse as the story unfolded. If a person is imagining maniacal scenarios while the movie is still playing, then you know the film is in trouble. Much along the lines of what Ken said, I was seriously hoping beyond all kind of hope that some bizarre or freak act of nature would just tear down both catalysts and the end credits would roll. Yes, it was that bad. I still can't get over how a film that I initially viewed as somewhat promising, could devolve with such rapid precision - from beginning to end. In that kind of vein, the movie is a resounding success. You could suggest an exquisite bust, if taken on those terms alone.

Kenneth's commentary is spot on, and I would even suggest it's kind in some regard. I haven't seen a movie of this atrocious a level in some time, and I guess that it just left a bad taste in my mouth. Wish that I had my time back. The movie reminded me of a mixture between 'Deathtrap', 'The Talented Mr. Ripley', and 'Midnight Cowboy'. What does that equate to you ask? Dogshit. While the three movies that I mentioned shouldn't even be in the same breath as this stinker, I just wanted to draw some kind of obscure parallel. Branagh's adaptation was an extremely forgettable movie on many levels, but I'd still like to see the original just so I have something somewhat salvageable for the sake of Michael Caine. Who knows though, everyone's tastes are different. For me personally though, there was absolutely nothing redeeming or otherwise noteworthy about this movie in the least. I'd be interested to hear someone's take that enjoyed this film, and as to why they actually enjoyed it.

My honest summation: Not even worth a rental

As I mentioned in another thread...I'll never get back the 90 min of my life that I spent watching this schlock.
