Default 'Sunshine' - High-Def Digest review

Peter's review of 'Sunshine' is up. He says Fox has done a very fine job in bringing this one to Blu-ray. The transfer is quite good, and the extras -- including the studio's first-ever Profile 1.1-enabled picture-in-picture commentary -- are informative and entertaining.

'Sunshine' is arguably the first modern sci-fi film since 'Blade Runner' to rightly earn the comparison to the ornate, stately science fiction classics of the '70s, such as '2001,' 'Silent Running' and 'Andromeda Strain.'

Wow this sounds like quite an accomplishment according Peter. I wanted this Blu-ray disk anyway but now I'm really hyped up.

I'm going to wait for a slightly cheaper price before buying Sunshine, but I've already seen the movie and look forward to watching it in high-def. The review sounds pretty good!

My friend said this movie was not good at all. I havent seen it yet. But questions I have:

Has anyone used the D-Box motion code? If so, is it work investing money into?

Peter only gave it 3.5 stars for the movie, he gave 2001 and Blade Runner 5 stars. The problem over recent years is that we've had a lot of bad sci-fi, AvP is a perfect example

As I said, I was going to get this br anyway but was just excited by the contents of his movie review. I never really put stock into the 5 star rating system for movies because it's a bit too broad IMO. But I absolutely do agree with you, that we have been getting bombarded with sub-par SCI-FI films.

Yep and after seeing this film, the bombardment continues.

'Close Encounters' is now regarded as a genuine epic as influential, awe-inspiring and revolutionary as 'Metropolis,' '2001: A Space Odyssey' and 'Blade Runner.'
Really Peter... does every single sci-fi movie that graces your silver screen need to be compared to 2001 and Blade Runner?

I guess without spoiling the movie, what was it about the movie that you didn't like?

Glad to see a reviewer give this movie some props........ no it ain't perfect, but it is the most thought provoking, innovative and original sci-fi to come out in years. Period. Danny Boyle has long ago earned my respect as a director, Danny and Alex have created some great flicks that don't serve a mainstream audience, but serviced a more art minded audience...... love it..... support movies that challenge......

Default Samsung BD-P1200

Anyone know if this will work with my Samsung BD-P1200 or will I need to wait for a firmware update?

Personally I really like the idea behind the movie but I think Boyle failed as a director to communicate it effectively. Just look at the deleted scenes. There is a great story in the film but I feel it was edited into incoherence which isn't what this film deserved.

Comparing Sunshine to 2001 is sacrilegious - yes they have common elements, eg, they are both set in space - but I'm struggling to understand how the wonder of Kubrick is revealed in the muddled plot and pacing of this film.

Don't get me wrong - I'm sure this film can be saved.
No doubt there will be a double-dip with the official director's unedited "never-before-seen" final cut extended edition which will be claimed "infinitely superior to the original release" in the next few years.

I got this disc today and had a look at the BD1.1 PiP stuff, and as the review says, it's incredibly basic and frankly not worth the effort or hype. Compared to the PiP on recent HD DVD releases, such as The Kingdom, it feels like something from the stone age.

But it's early days. I wonder though if BD1.1 allows the mixing of PiP with text and graphic layers as HDi does?

I haven't seen this film. But I think Gattaca (which is also coming out soon on blu-ray) is the best intelligent sci-fi film.
