Default 'The Fly' -- High-Def Digest review

Just posted Peter's review of 'The Fly.' Though the video and audio won't be mistaken for a new release, he says this one still offers a nice upgrade over the standard DVD and is well worth picking up.

Really? Seems a bit harsh to me on the PQ. I thought this movie looked amazing. Oh well - I still enjoyed it a lot!

My biggest disappointment is that the source still shows its age. It's pretty clean aside from film grain typical of the period, and there is only a slight amount of dirt and blemishes, but the image just lacks pop -- blacks are solid, but contrast remains flat. Shadow delineation is also rarely better than average. Likewise, colors never leap off the screen, with even the most vibrant uses of reds and blues looking fairly ho-hum. Fleshtones, while generally accurate, don't reveal much detail, even in close-ups. Overall depth to the image is just fair, and I never felt like I was looking at a truly three-dimensional picture. The transfer is also generally soft and lacking in sharpness, though at least some of this is indicative of the source material. At least Fox has done a fine job with the encoding, as there’s no edge enhancement or apparent compression artifacts. Again, this one’s not awful – I just hoped for more of a high-def upgrade than this Blu-ray offers.
Sounds like 2.5/3.. not a 3.5.

Peter did not include an screeshoot of the movie? That's weird.

Usually a 3.5 would be a good score for an older catalog title. I really wish they would revisit some old ratings. "Traffic" got a 4 my friend told me yesterday as he looked through the reviews, and obviously we all know that title is considered one of the absolute worst looking HD DVDs. New people obviously discover HDD all the time, and many of the really old reviews from the beginning appear extremely inaccurate given what we all know is possible at present. There would be nothing wrong with redoing some of these reviews. They were done with the best available knowledge at the time. I know the reviewers are extremely busy right now, but early January should give them PLENTY of time.

Just received the Fly yesterday from Amazon. I was pleased with what they did in terms of PQ. This movie looks way better than Edward Scissorhands, which received a 3 score on PQ. Overall a good package. Owning is not a must, but it definitely contains a high replay value.
