Default 'Hairspray' (2007) - High-Def Digest review

Peter's review of 'Hairspray' is up. He says this very first high-def title from New Line doesn't disappoint, boasting terrific video and audio, and two discs full of extras.

My wife saw Hairspray in the theater with her girlfriends and she absolutely loved it. Me, I'll have a tough time getting past Travolta as a woman but this will be a must buy. For my wife, you understand!

I've got a feeling the sales numbers on this one are gonna surprise a lot of people in the forum and elsewhere.

I doubt it will be a surprise, this movie was a big release. It will sell better than Meet The Robinsons that is for sure.

Yeah, but many people will argue it's just a chick flick and won't appeal to the PS3 videogame playing crowd.

Yes true, I expect it to sell very well though.

GREAT! Thanks Peter, lol. I have finally convinced my daughter that she should get the sd dvd of this film. I REALLY have no desire to see Travolta, in drag, in 1080p (or 1080i ,720p, 480p ,480i, brille...WHATEVER!!). Now...with this great review...I am now tempted. My daughter loves blu and once she heard this movie was coming out on blu-ray, she has been begging me to get it for her. Oh well...going to have to think about this one. This will be more for her than for me. I may have to leave the room as she watches it, lol.

Enough with the "Playstation crowd" comments, this keeps getting mentioned and no matter how often it is pounded into some heads, it never gets past the skin: I'll say it again: many owners of the Playstation bought their players for movies, including me and alot of people on these boards and I am sure elsewhere, though it's my 2nd blu-ray player. I love musicals, loved this movie, and so happy to hear it's coming day and date and with a DTS master track, wow, I can finally play those too with my new receiver. Some of Fox's DTS Master tracks are stunners.

Wonder about the hd-dvd release, can they fit a DTS master track on them? Well, we'll see when they finally release it. Meanwhile, I am in on release day for this one!

It's been one awesome month for blu-ray releases, and many 5 star releases as well (I don't mean the review here, but others have given it a 5 on most levels as well). I mean Cars, Ratatouille, Spidey, Close Encounters, Hairspray and they are still coming. I caught Independence Day on HD on Dish the other day and wow, it is stunning, definately a new master, and definately remastered sound, so much better than the dvd was. I can't wait for the blu-ray with DTS master!

I saw the movie in the theater. The basic story line is 4.5 stars even though it's been played again and again and again. The execution of the story gets 1 star. The tunes are not entertaining or catchy. The characters are uninteresting except for Christopher Walken's. I couldn't wait for the movie to end.

P.S. And the concession stand popcorn made me sick the next day.

Peter, now that you have upgraded your equipment are you going to go back and relisten to the Fox releases in particular. Since i have the ps3 and can't hear the ful DTS HD MA tracks i would love to get your take on how much of an improvement there is. Especially on movies like Day After Tomorrow, FF 1 &2, X men. Anyway keep up the good work i may have to check this release out based on your review.

Peter,

would love to know what audio decoder/receiver you bought when you upgraded to full HDMI 1.3 and DTS-HD MA decoding. Thanks!

dave (from dvdfile)

p.s. if you have the time, I second the vote to have you re-evaluate some of the Fox DTS-HD MA soundtracks! We'd all love to hear how your impression may/may not change versus the 1500 kbps core. thanks for such great reviews!

Of the 3 people I know who bought a PS3, they did so only to use it as a BD movie player (no games). Myself included.

New Line's first ever HDM release and it gets 5***** overall... That is very impressive, and I look foreward to more releases from them in the near future...
