Default Sony Goes Profile 1.1 with 'Resident Evil: Extinction'

The latest studio to announce plans for its first Profile 1.1 Blu-ray title, Sony's 'Resident Evil: Extinction' is shaping up to its most technologically advanced BD release yet.

As we've previously reported, the studio first alerted retailers that it was planning a January 2, 2008 Blu-ray release for the third film in 'Resident Evil' franchise late last month. Although Sony declined to release supplemental details at the time, full specs for the title are now in, and they seem sure to impress.

Among the Blu-ray exclusives planned for the disc are two Profile 1.1-enhanced features -- the "Under the Umbrella" video commentary (Sony's first true picture-in-picture track), and "Blu-Wizard 2.0," a newly-energized version of the studio's disc search content and organization interface, which will now "memorize" how you've watched content and store it for future access even after you eject the disc from the player.

When will we have BD players that are 1.1 compliant? When will the PS3 be 1.1 compliant?

I'd be amazed if Sony doesn't put out an update to make the PS3 1.1 compliant with this release.

The ability to do Profile 1.1 lies in the ability of the hardware and firmware. Since the PS3 is the most powerful BD player to date (in terms of power and memory) there is no reason it shouldn't be capable of doing 1.1 or 2.0 for that matter.

HD players are stripped down PCs. To make them as cheap as possible they use slow chips and as little memory as possible. This leads to longer load times which is why the PS3 is the fastest loading player as well.

The players that won't be upgradable are the one that simply lack the hardware to run enhanced java apps.

I'm certain the PS3 will be 1.1 compliant.

Is anyone else wondering if he meant "trailers" instead of "demos?" It seems odd that they would include a Resident Evil 5 demo because the game is probably a year away from release, and most demos are created and released in the last few months. Also, it seems odd that they would include demos on the standard definition DVD version because of space issues (PSN demos are pushing 1.2GB routinely). The demos would also require a PS3 to play and I can't imagine that there would be a high percentage of PS3 owners who would choose to buy the DVD version over the Blu-ray version.

Anyone else agree?

whooo hoo... it's about time bd came up to hd dvd standards... and it's with an awesome movie... I'll buy it. fyi the ps3 is the fastest loading bd player as is the xbox 360 addon is the fastest hd dvd player (they aren't stripped down computers)... the bd standalones are striped down computers too... I'm lucky i bought a ps3 because it should be able to do bd- 1.1 and 2.0... if it doesn't i'll be very disappointed and will probialy sell my ps3 for the new samsung combo player.

I think it's safe to assume a PS3 profile 1.1 firmware update will come with the end-of-December update given that Sony is releasing it's first PIP BR on Jan 2nd. I'll be disappointed if it doesn't happen. We'll see how it plays out.
