Default '2001' - High-Def Digest review

Just posted Kenneth's review of '2001: A Space Odyssey.' He calls this Blu-ray edition of the flick a must-have release, featuring a jaw-droppingly gorgeous transfer, an elaborate PCM audio track, and a wealth of supplemental features.

Brilliant. Very happy with the results of the review. This, along with Blade Runner, is one of those movies I have literally been waiting YEARS to get my hands on with a really solid transfer. Looks like I can finally go out and buy these movies.

Fantastic. This is not released in Australia until 12/5 I can't wait. Another great transfer from Warner of a classic title.

The original mono track has been remixed for 5.1 surround, but the rear channels have a limited presence that bolsters acoustics more than anything.

In its 70mm release 2001 would have had a 6 channel magnetic sound track. The 5.1 mix is most likely based on that original multi-channel mix. The 35mm release may have offered both a mono optical soundtrack and a 4 channel magnetic track.

I bought A Clockwork Orange already, but I'm really considering this movie.

On a side note: They need to release more 70mm films on HDM.

Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet and Terrence Malick's The New World would look awesome.

I agree. So far the only ones I know of are Grand Prix and 2001, both look amazing by the way.

Kenneth, just curious but what Yamaha 7.1 model do you have, it doesn't mention it in your equipment summary.

Thanks.

Mutiny on the Bounty is 70mm and is out on both formats (is it? - it's WB, I have the HDD version)

The Deer Hunter and Spartacus are out on HDD (the former looks great, the latter is terrible and needs a new transfer/modern restoration), and Sony has promised Lawrence of Arabia on Blu, but has yet to deliver.

Aside from Lawrence, my most-wanted 70mm films on HD (either format) are Cheyenne Autumn, Patton, and West Side Story.

While I agree it's an excellent transfer full of jaw-dropping detail, it is plagued by pretty obvious edge enhancement.

Very appropriate to give this film a 5 star rating. It is a genuine classic, and it's tough to overstate it's influence. While I wish they would have used the last cover-art (with the painting of the space station framed in the on a white background), sounds as though this upgrade is too tough to pass up. I haven't seen any studio pull off restorations of classics as impressively as Warner. Road Warrior was highly impressive, and Enter the Dragon was pretty good too. Nice to see Warner add the PCM tracks for Blu-ray.

Way to go Warner!

That's funny, according to the reviewer...

One of you are obviously wrong.

I have to agree, this movie was about as perfect in PQ as you can get. My only complaint was the lack of a real baseline, but I think that's because alot of the music was classical. That and I didn't notice there was a PCM track till after I watched it the first time.
