Default 'Galapagos' - High-Def Digest review

Kenneth's review of 'Galapagos' is up. As BBC Video's follow-up to its phenomenally successful next-gen release of 'Planet Earth,' Kenneth says this Blu-ray is sure to find its way into HDTV showrooms across across the country. Unfortunately, despite all the high-def eye candy, a stereo sound mix and a total lack of extras drag down the overall grade.

I'll be buying. Saw this on the National Geographic Channel in SD and was astounded by it. Great documentary.

This really is a "must add" to anyone's Blu-Ray collection. I was blown away by the video quality, and the program itself is done so nicely. The sound is 2-ch, but honestly, you'll forget after a few minutes of watching.

Your post is 100% true, my friend. I really thought the sound was great for a 2 channel sourround mix. I was really impressed by the under-water scenes; I thought most of them looked jaw-dropping gorgeous.

This is one title that you have to pick up.

I bought this blindly when it came out. Looks like I made a decent choice.

Hopefully we'll watch it this weekend. So many unopened movies piling up.

Think I'll wait until it's released in the UK... Rather have David Attenborough's commentary than Swinton's (who?).

Peace

Actually, I'd have to agree with that. Attenborough's commentary and voice are unbeatable. If they come out with a US one, then maybe I'll do an ebay swap!

For the record, Attenborough never narrated Galapagos...even the UK version. Are you thinking of Planet Earth...?

The UK version is narrated by Tom Hewitt. There's no reason not to get this because of Swinton's narration. It's just fine. Can't be any worse than the Planet Earth Weaver vs. Attenborough debacle.

I've got a PS3 with my audio/video running through a Denon AVR-2807. My TV is a Mits WD-65731 1080p. When I put in any other blu-ray I get 1080p resolution. When I put in Galapagos I only get 1080i. I've Google'd this and I've seen that others have this problem but I've yet to see a solution. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hmm. If this indeed "trumps" Planet Earth's PQ, why did it not get five stars? Or maybe the Planet Earth PQ rating requires amendment?

I'm not much for nature programming, but I did
like this. It takes one eco-system in depth unlike
Planet Earth trying to cover so much and not
really giving you anything but a tid-bit here and
a tid-bit there. I don't know about the difference
in the reviews as I don't read them.

It's labeled wrong, it's really a 1080i disc.
