Default 'Tekkonkinkreet' - High-Def Digest review

Kenneth's review of 'Tekkonkinkreet' is up. Although the film itself sounds pretty complex, he says this Blu-ray is another winner from Sony, boasting a beautiful transfer and an uncompressed PCM mix that work hand-in-hand to enhance the film.

As a movie watcher who's anime interests don't extend very far, I was intrigued by the tagline "From the creators of the Animatrix"...

Thus my fantastic voyage with this movie began. It was a Blind buy to encourage Sony to release more catalog cartoons on HD but I am very happy with the quality of this movie.

It's easy to understand and apparently not a bad intro to the anime genre. I think most people will enjoy it's charming story but the PQ will blow away anyone who isn't a believer in HD animation.

I give it a Thumbs Up and would at the very least, recommend a rent.

I love Japanese animated films
This will be added to my collection on 10/24 when it's released in Australia.
I'm gald the Japanese audio has been given the usual uncompressed treatment.
Also thumbs up to Sony for releasing a wide range of titles

I'm really interested in seeing this. I'm planning a blind buy. Unfortunatley my Best Buy didn't have it last time I was there.

Just ordered from amazon, since CC/BB refuse to stock it.

Can't wait for it.

I picked up my copy at a Canadian Best Buy so I am sure the chain is stocking them. Our store up here is very big and has a huge selection of Blu-Rays so it wouldn't surprise me if this title wasn't sold at some of the less busy locations...

If he worked on Princess Mononoke, this has got to be good.

Their stocking choices might be different in Canada. I know I checked their website on the day of release and it said "No available in stores" on their website, so I just ordered it elsewhere.

Saw this earlier today, gorgeous HD PQ but not much else that blew my skirt up in terms of the show itself. I'm not the type who likes most meta-physical/experimental anime or when the "standard-genre" nature of anime shows turns into philosophical acid trips. I also didn't like the character design/art style as much as I usually do, even when I typically accept any anime style well...so, anyway, this whole amalgam didn't do much for me at all.

I suggest most people, even anime fans, rent this first. I think it will split people in the same vein of shows like Serial Experiments Lain.

What's up with that? How can BB be the number 1 seller of HD media & not Amazon

Pretty good review of the movie, I felt you pretty much captured what it was I liked about the movie. Though honestly I think you were a bit kind in describing the characters....

Quote:
White is a savant of sorts -- an optimist who has trouble tying his own shoes.
He's actually mildly retarded. It's not that he's just dumb, i.e. lacking intelligence...he's retarded. He has a toilet paper roll attached to his belt for god sakes!

Quote:
Black is an aggressive youth with a quick temper who will do anything to protect his brother.
He's a psychopathic, bordering on schizophrenic killer. He's not just a bit agressive, he's over the top murderous. He also has a split personality with his other self that goes out of control at the end of the movie. Black - if the color doesn't make it obvious is the Yang. White is the Yin. Both have a few screws loose (I think he even says this quite literally), but together they both make a functioning human being. Apart they unravel.

Quote:
But their lives aren’t fun and games -- the boys form a gang that faces off against other factions on a regular basis. After a brutal confrontation with a local yakuza gang, Black inadvertently leaves a void in the city’s power structure. As a pale villain named Mr. Snake takes over with a platoon of genetically altered soldiers, Black and White have to face their new enemy and come to terms with their own purpose in Treasure Town.
Actually it wasn't Black who created a power void in the city, it was Snake who had hired one of the other Yakuza bosses henchmen to assasinate him. Once the Yakuza boss was dead, Snake moved in. The only thing Black did was existing as a problem for the Yakuza orgination. However, the Yakuza created the power vacuum in the Yakuza, not Black. Everything you say in this paragraph though contradicts the next one...

Quote:
Their love spills out to the city itself as the two become guardians, fighting to preserve everything that is decent about their streets. Granted, Arias spreads the symbolism a bit thick, but the boys’ relationship never feels forced.
I don't think it's quite that wholesome and lovey dovey. They are a street gang, The Cats. They do what street gangs do, steal, beat people up, and control things. I think that both the boys get more sympathy from the older crowd having themselves grown up in that area, but I wouldn't call it "love" that spills out into the streets and changes everything. I think quite the opposite happens, outsiders try to change the town and the town denies that change, though change is inevitable.
