Thumbs up 'GoodFellas' - High-Def Digest Review

Hitting stores on Blu-ray this week (Jan 16), Peter's 'GoodFellas' review is up. No great surprises here -- he loves the fillm itself, which is now a Scorcese classic. He also praises this Blu-ray release, from its sharp transfer and great-sounding soundtrack to its healthy assortment of extras.

Nice review and seems to be another must have. Having only watched this recently though I think I'll wait before I go for this. Casino is a more pressing purchase at the moment.

I've seen the HD-DVD version and was impressed, definitely looks better than the SD version. I'm just curious does the Blu-Ray version looks better? I don't remember reading that on the review...thanks!

I think it's rare that Peter will cite any Blu-ray version of a Warner or Paramount disc to be different in any way from the HD DVD version.

For that reason, it was disapointing to see a review of this take up today's "slot". I think Peter could have spent 20 minutes comparing the disc to let us know that it was of simliar quallity and then reviewed some OTHER title (there are numerous coming out today for example).

I bought this a few months ago after I first got my PS3. I finally got around to watching it again—but this time on my new TV (first viewed it on a 34" RCA CRT). Wow! This one has some serious color. In the "You really are a funny guy!" scene, I found it hard to watch the movie, as I was busy being awed by the colors. The Corvette in the "pistol-whipping" scene is seriously red.

This title also has depth. In most scenes, it was as if I was looking through a window. I could actually see the texture in the canvas of the "two dogs and old man" painting.

Something strange I noticed: at 01:16:43, there is a thin black line down the middle of the image. I Googled it and found that others had noticed that as well.

Yes, that problem is inherent to the movie. The camera negative was damaged, but Scorsese liked the performances in that take best and decided to live with the scratch.

If the same thing happened today, the scratch could be digitally painted out, but at the time that would have been prohibitively expensive.

I'm nitpicking here, but I noticed one minor vertical line--this time a thin jaggy white line--quite possibley in one frame in the scene with Billy Batts--the 'go home and get your fucking shine box' scene. It's hardly noticeable, you'll have to go frame by frame to see it.
