Default 'Surf's Up' - High-Def Digest review

Just posted Peter's review of 'Surf's Up.' He says this is not the greatest animated flick you'll see, but as a Blu-ray release, this one's nearly aces, boasting a perfect five star audio rating and strong scores for both video and supplements.

yeah this is a difficult one to review because of the intentional grain but I could imagine some of the beach scenes are absolutely flawless.

I cant wait to pick this up on release

This a a blind buy for me

"The image is a hampered at times by the intentionally-degraded video quality".

I guess the directors made a mistake for doing the movie in a documentary style and having grain. Maybe he should put some of the missing blu tint in the movie and no grain in the documentary style he was trying to do.

Will buy this when released in Oz. I'm a sucker for animation. As for PQ is good to see a change every now and then.

I will pick this one up for my son. He enjoyed it. Man...my kids are taking over my movie selection lately!!! That will change though in the next couple of weeks and releases.

Just to reiterate, the TrueHD track is 24/48, not 16/48

the truehd track matches the studio master

Personally, I liked the documentary-style storytelling with the intentional grain. It was different. It'll still look awesome on my TV, and that's all that matters. Well, sound aside, that is.

I know, BULLSHIT! IF the movie is supposed to look like a documentary, that should not hamper it's rating! Does it exceed normal PQ? Does it look absolutely stunning? IF HELL YES, then leave the director's and thier choice BE! WE VIEWERS can decide for ourselves! There is no reason this shouldn't be as good as Open Season, all things considered.

Agreed. Amazon just brought my copy and I loved the look. I had already seen the movie so I loved it and I thought the video looked damn good

Its no Happy feet but than again the PQ was never meant to be seen without some intentional noise. Has a documentary style look at times or a more film-based look but not throughout the entire runtime & when it doesn't have that look it is on par with Happy Feet. I couldn't find one scene which clearly distinguished a winner in the audio department.. LPCM vs. TrueHD so I gave both a perfect 10/10

Video is a 10 as well, or 5/5. Whichever floats your boat.

I completely agree, Ive watched 20 hi def movies in the past 3 days (dont ask.. cost a lot.. damn friends ^_^)

By far the best looking ones of the bunch were FF2, and Surfs up. The documentary style of the movie was awesome, much better than happy feet.

Definite 5/5 pq. I dont see how it doesn't get that.. it was meant to LOOK like that.. 300 got a high pq rating and it was grainy as hell cuz the director WANTED it to look like that.. same goes for surfs up..
