Thumbs up 'Speed' - High-Def Digest Review

Seeing as the disc was released back in November, we're a bit late to the party with this new review of 'Speed' on Blu-ray. Nevertheless, this one does score high marks for both video and audio from our reviewer Peter Bracke. On the not-so-bright side, Peter was somewhat disappointed by a lack of any real video-based supplements, although some recycled audio commentary tracks and few HD-only bonues do pick up some of the slack.

A solid transfer of a classic film... sounds like a winner to me.

They don't make films like this any more (boy do I sound old!) A good classic Hollywood blockbuster - definitely one for my collection!

I am looking forward to add "Speed" to my Blu-ray collection library this year.

I would be interested in picking this up but I wont due to the fact that they has a bunch of bad disks out there. I dont think that the studios have any idea how bad this negative word of mouth concerning quality control can be for the sales of a disk. Mabey there were only 500 bad ones and they are all gone. Or mabey there were 5000 and half of them are still on the shelves ? Do you know ? I don't. Is there any way to tell a new pressing from the last one. You can tell by looking at the inside track of the disk but this requires you to buy it and open it first. If the studios had a good track record of pulling them all back that would be one thing but they dont.

A good example is the Back to the Future trilogy a few years back. The second and third movies were framed wrong. They were all left on the shelves hoping that no one would notice. A fixed version was finally available but not until much later and they had a trade in program that I am not sure accually replaced anyones disks. So I never bought it and told others not to buy it.

That is the word going around yeah. I honestly don't know specifics but I know that there was more than one bad pressing. Like I said though the studios never track them down and recall them they just wait until someone complains and then offer to replace it via a mail in program.

Well ... I took a chance and picked this one up yesterday. (I'd been wanting to get it ever since I got my BDP-1000). To my surprise, the disc worked perfectly fine (I was ready to have to send it into Fox for a replacement, but was hoping I'd waited long enough for the newer discs to be in stores ...) It does take a bit longer to come up than any other BD disc I've got (you can tell the Java engine is loading/caching info.) but to be honest, that really didn't bother me, as it was still faster than the average load time on my HD-A1!
The image is pretty impressive and the sound was near-reference quality as well. During some of the explosion scenes, I actually felt the bass rather than just hearing it - always a good sign for me!
