Thumbs up 'We Were Soldiers' - High-Def Digest Review

Peter's latest review is for the Blu-ray edition of 'We Were Soldiers.' Not his favorite film, but with a 4 star video rating and a 4.5 star audio rating, quite a good Blu-ray release... It hits stores 1/23/07.

Default Note to Peter

Hi Peter,

first I'd like to thank you for the great effort in all the reviews, they are much appreciated.

An interesting note on Paramounts BDs. The DTS tracks not only have a higher bitrate (@1,5mbps) than the Dolby tracks (@640kbps), but they are also 48khz/24 bit while the DD tracks are at 48/16.

Actually this is true for basically all BDs out so far. All DTS tracks from Lionsgate (some are 1,5 mbps and some are 3mbps) and FOX (and these are lossless master audios as you sure know) are full 48/24.

All DD tracks on BD apear to be 48/16 so far.

There's a very good thread for reference at AVS. It's a stikcy so there should be no problem finding it, in case you'd like to.

Peter the movie was not based on a novel, Hal Moore was there.

Peter, the mundane and boring routine of a soldier's life and existance are what makes them great soldiers. That's what saves lives and protects yours and everyone else's freedoms.

Has anybody noticed whilst watching this movie that the centre channel was very soft. My copy is but the surrounds and mains were spot on. Awesome soundtrack in DTS, but the centre channel was way off. My other BD's do not have this problem. I only run a 5.1 system, so do I need to down sample the soundtrack-if that's the right terminoligy- to get a better sound level from the centre channel or is this common for this release as far as the centre channel is concerned?

Thanks,

Sean.

Default we were soldiers good movie or not

Hello
I myself could not wait for this film to come out on blu ray i already own the dvd.
I took my father along with my brother to see this film in theaters, you see my father served in the 7th cavalry 1st batallion company A under Capt Nadal, he fought in the Ia Drang vally in the battle this movie portrayed.
Me and my brother both could see how hard it was for him to see it for all the memory it brought back.
As we left the theater though , my brother asked him what he thought of it and to our surprise he stuck his fist in the air and yelled AIR CAV!!!!!, startling me my brother and everyone around us.
He then said it was the best portrayal of those days as he had ever seen. the only critism he had was they could have said more about Sgt Ernie Savage as it was his ability to stay cool under pressure, and accuratly call in artillery, that kept him and his cut off platoon alive.

^^^ that post, is reason enough for this movie to be made...... Peter.
Haven't read this review before, caught it on the bump. Although I don't really want to jump in on the Peter bashing going on in the kIng Kong thread. This is a really really bad review. And I'm ashamed that someone would disrespect the great service that these men put in. This is a great movie about great men who performed great services.

Welcome to the forums, Kristino.

Sure, if it were the first Vietnam movie. But it's not, and it didn't cover any ground that wasn't covered before.

BULLSHIT.

Pure, unadulterated bullshit.

There is a difference between disliking a mediocre, melodramatic war movie and disrespecting our troops.

I guess I'll have to agree to disagree with you and Peter then. I have many family member and friends in the service. And there's nothing mediocre and melodramatic about this story. At least in comparison to the portrayal of the services and acts of service men. I dunno when the people you love go to countries far away, with the chance they couldn't return home, I guess you could say it gets a little melodramatic.
Maybe you have to be an army brat to apreciate that sorta thing, maybe not. But I considered it disrepectful and I have friends and family that would feel the same way.
And that's not bullshit.

You're still not able to distinguish between not liking a movie and not respecting our troops.

We Were Soldiers is a movie, and a poorly written one filled with inane dialogue and bad war movie cliches. How many times do characters on the battlefield call out "Tell my wife I love her?" in the movie? At least three. Not once, not twice, but three times it repeats that. Chris Klein's speech at the beginning about how he joined the army so that he could save all the orphans of the world is howlingly awful. And half the movie is spent watching the wives back home wringing their hands and pining for their husbands.

I haven't seen this movie since I was like, 14, but I'll always remember that hilariously delivered line of TELL MY RIFE I LOVE HER...AND MY BAYBEEEEEEEEEEEE! YOU TELL HER!

Also emoney you must have PTSD if you think a bad review for a bad movie is disrespecting any troop.
