Thumbs up 'Alien vs. Predator' -- High-Def Digest review

Got the latest batch of titles from Fox today, and checked out 'Alien vs. Predator' first:

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/alienvspredator.html

A good disc -- very nice transfer and soundtrack. However, for being a BD-50, I though there would be more extras. I'm not MPEG-2 bashing -- I've given some strong reviews to MPEG-2 titles lately -- but I do wonder if Fox couldn't have fit more goodies here without compromising quality if they had gone with AVC MPEG-4 or VC-1.

I'll probably pick this up even though I didn't care much for the movie. I still can't believe that two classic rated R series come together in a PG-13 lukewarm movie. The story really had potential, the AVP series of video games and comics are epic.

I'll be happy when the real Aliens and Predator flicks come out on BD.

It's a shame about the noise and softness in parts, I thought this had the potential to be one of the best. Still will probably pick it up at some point though.

When you select the DTS-HD MA track, does it (the core) play back as DTS 96/24 5.1 or only "normal" DTS 5.1 ?

This is another movie that I love but I have seen so many times (and is always on HBO/Showtime) so I couldn't bring myself to buy it even if it was on HD DVD. (Batman Begins falls into this category too)

Do you buy your movies or do you get them for free? I've always wandered about this...

Thanks.

Now, when they say 'extended' version, do they mean the cheesy intro that was thrown on at the beginning of the standard DVD, or the full-on director's cut with the CGI gore and character scenes added from the 2-disc edition?

My secondary TV is in my livingroom and is a 42" Panasonic Viera 1080p plasma screen. I've got a Samsung BD-UP5000 connected to that for all my HD needs. No surround sound there, though.

I just watched it again to get back in the AVP mood.
And I have never seen it unrated so it was kinda new.
But wow,, the added gore wass soooo bad
Anyway, I always thought the movie was a fun ride, and really has an interesting story. Everything is awesome until the girls starts running side by side with the predator. The video is really grainy and since then I'm sure this would go down half a star. it did sound pretty good though
Movie: 3.5/5
PQ: 3.5/5
AQ: 4/5
