The popping sound could also be the AV receiver. I recently bought a new Onkyo and immediately noticed a popping sound in the rear channels when I watched a Blu-ray. So I watched another and same thing. It was so annoying that I started thinking maybe it was my speakers or my wires so I had them tested and they are all fine. Then I did some more research and found out that the new Onkyos have a host of problems with this being one of them. I returned it and got a Pioneer and the popping has ceased.

I haven't actually heard the Titanic issue though, if it is an issue. I don't own a copy yet.

It sounds like youre talking about the dreaded "DTS bomb". It's not likely this the same thing. I haven't seen the titanic bd yet, but from what I've read above this is actually part of the sound track. The DTS bomb sound is more like fire crackers going off next to your ear -- not something that you need to listen carefully for.

I don't have an opinion about the Titanic soundtrack, personally. I haven't watched the disc yet. However, people are saying that the pop is present on the accompanying DVD as well. So this is (allegedly) less a distinction between lossy and lossless, than something that happened when the soundtrack was remastered.
