Default 'JAWS' - High-Def Digest Review

E has just reviewed 'JAWS.' He says Spielberg's classic film arrives with a spectacular, reference-quality audio and video presentation that will more than satisfy movie lovers everywhere. Many of the supplements from previous releases are ported over, but this latest incarnation also offers a couple new surprises, making this Blu-ray edition of 'Jaws' a must-own.

How does the math work out to be a 4.5 star release? With the 3 for supplements and 2 for HD Extras, wouldn't that equal 5 for extras, thus 20/4 = 5? Just curious.

so everything is on 1 blu disc? damn, i am pleasantly surprised. figured they woulda shoved the extras or at least one of the docs onto a 2nd disc. nice to see them take advantage of the space.

Average is from the first 4. It's explained more here:

E must not have felt the HD extras warranted an additional half point.

Good to know this bd is going to be top notch. I was afraid the 7.1 mix would sound fake. Glad to see this has gotten the white glove treatment. With all these releases this is going to be an expensive next couple of months.

As Mike explained, the mathematical average is calculated only by the first four categories. 18 divided by 4 = 4.5.

"High-Def Exclusives" is considered a sort of "extra credit" category. It's at the reviewer's discretion to decide if he wants to round up or down to the next half-star mark based on that. In this case, it sounds like E. felt the exclusives weren't substantive enough to push the overall grade to a 5.

^^ As Josh pointed out -- yes, the exclusives are often treated by us as a sort of extra credit: the more studios offer, the higher the score. This is particular case I, personally, made the judgment call on the final scoring. It's great package, really love it, but not exactly what I would deem an overall 5-star deal. Perhaps a brand-new, much-more recent retrospective doc would have sealed the deal for me.

I don't mind the two-hour doc from the laserdisc, but that's more of a collection of random interviews from two decades ago, pieced together with other random footage.

It says Ridley Scott's 'Aliens' in the review. Is that too nitpicky? It just stuck out to me.

I'm excited to pick this up.

The screenshots look amazing. I'm looking forward to picking this up since I've only ever seen it in very washed-out-looking transfers.
