I might replace my 5-disc HD DVD if this re-release has lossless audio on the archival versions and/or new encodes at a higher bitrate.
But, knowing Warner, this won't happen and they'll repackage the existing discs...Steve Zissou: Anne-Marie, do all the interns get Glocks?
Anne-Marie Sakowitz: No, they all share one. -

The Original 5-disc set was flawless. This set is unnecessary if you already own that set on Blu or red.

No thanks, I already have the 5 disc set, and unless this is a digibook release, there is nothing they can do to improve it.

The only thing they could do to improve the 5 disk set is release the original theatrical cut as a single dosk.

There's a lot that could be done to improve the 5-disc set (without even creating new materials). Higher-bitrate encodes using newer codec versions, the extras in HD, as they were originally intended to be, consolidation onto fewer discs, etc.

Honestly, I have not watched a single special features off the 5 disc set, so having them in HD would be pointless to me. Plus, I only watch the bonus features once unless it is some extra scene that takes place after or before the movie, so for me, it wouldn't matter if they were upgraded to HD since I would never rewatch them. I mean, I found Star Wars' Empire of Dreams to be the best movie documentary ever, and I will never watch it a second time, so no other special feature has a chance of being rewatched.

I don't think that's possible. The product description indicates that all of the previous extras materials will be carried over, including the 4-hour Dangerous Days documentary. There's no way that all of the material from the previous set's two DVDs, plus some quantity of new material, could be crammed onto a single DVD if they wanted to. Some of this stuff will have to be moved onto the BDs which means the opportunity for new encodes. Let's hope they take that opportunity, but let's not hold our collective breath.
