Default Top 5 / Bottom 5: Richard Linklater

We REALLY need more of this man's movies on Blu-ray.

With 'Bernie' opening, we thought it would be a good time to take a look back at Richard Linklater's illustrious career to chronicle his best and worst films:

I think Waking Life deserves mention in the Worst Category.

Whats terrible is I've only seen A Scanner Darkly, but I loved it, was not bored and it gets better with each viewing for me, so I just might enjoy his other movies, I feel bad that I still havent seen Dazed and Confused but I've never had any desire too really...

Scanner Darkly and Suburbia out of the bottom 5 and agree with Twonun on Waking Life. Probably take out Before Sunrise too. Although Before Sunset was great.

Before Sunrise & Before Sunset are at the top of my Blu wishlist. It's ridiculous that we haven't gotten them yet.

I'm glad SubUrbia's placement was a relatively noncommittal one. Sure, it might not be a contender for "top 5", but it's actually a pretty great companion to Dazed and Confused.

Where Dazed celebrates a certain kind of aimlessness a generation embraces, SubUrbia shows that aimlessness played out within a different decade and a group of people a few years older. That celebratory feeling is gone, replaced with a slight sense of dread and acknowledgment of wasted youth. I'd love to see a Criterion release of it someday, as I've read rumors (or, at least, wishful thinking) of it for years.

Also glad to see a new Linklater film in theaters. With him, Whit Stillman, and Spike Lee all releasing films this year, it feels like a nice, nostalgic return of some of the indie greats.

Best: Before Sunrise and Before Sunset

    Worst: Everything else.

Pretty much. I also enjoy Dazed, but it is weak compared to the Before films. Of course, most films are weak compared to those.
