Nothing wrong with my HD DVD, but I went ahead and picked this up at Target for $14.99. I watched and compared a few chapters and the darker contrast and heavier grain does have a more pleasing effect on my eyes. I don't really notice any more detail, which does seem a little odd considering the increase in grain (which I suppose some of which is brought about by just being a darker picture). Normally the grainier version has more fine detail, and it does make me wonder if some of this grain was artificially added in there (but just for a second, I know it probably wasn't) In any case, the atmosphere just seems better, more appropriate for the picture. I don't know if that was the intent, or if the picture shown in theaters in 1942 was darker like this version, but it does look like it added depth to the movie.
And even though I only got the 1 disc version, I'm very happy to have the added special features which are not on the HD DVD. -

This is $24.99 today at amazon.com and Best Buy. Amazon matched BBY's one day sale, so Amazon will probably return to regular price tomorrow. Just got mine!

Yeah, I grabbed it too from Amazon, couldn't resist. I have the HD DVD and am happy this big boxset came down in price, don't know why but I love these silly big flashy sets, even though I have nowhere to put it, lol.
